Hi,

I'm pretty new here. I'm glad to find a good forum to hang out on.

I just entered my first contest. It's a first chapter contest sponsored by Kelli Collins, an editor from Ellora's Cave, for people on Twitter. The winner gets a free critique, and could potentially be offered a contract, if EC likes it enough.

I'm really nervous. I found out that I'm competing against actual, published authors! I posted about this on my blog already....I made a mistake in my synopsis and didn't catch it til after I subbed. Eeek. I did contact her, though, to tell her.

The deadline was Saturday, and I think the results will be announced September 15. It seems like forever! Oh well, back to polishing the ms.

I wouldn't worry too much about compeating against "actual, published authors!" as they can have off days and if they've written something that the editor(s) judging the competition don't want it won't matter how good it is.
Also at the very least you will get feedback from an editor who will tell you what you need to write in order to get published.

- Also the link to your blog in your sig is wrong

Declan: Bless you! I have made that mistake a bunch of times, including in an email to the aforementioned editor!

I looked at my link, thinking "what, it looks right to me", then I clicked on it. Ugh. The link title was right--wordpress--but for the actual link itself, I put in blogspot. Most of my blogs are with blogger.

So thanks for telling me. Kind of hard to drive traffic to your blog when the link is wrong. ;)

Behind you!
It's a pleasure to meet you, Juliette.

Contest entries are usually something people haven't slaved over nearly as much as they do submissions, so you might stand a better chance than you think. Good luck to you!

Juliette, you will be just fine. Going against 'actual, published authors' isn't a huge deal becasue those authors were in the same boat as you at one point. And, look at it like this, you have now gotten your name out there and people are going to know who you are.

Best of luck!

Good luck, Juliette! Remember to keep writing while you wait, so you'll have something else to show them when you win!
