I am sure there are threads about it here, but I can't find it.

I have two books on amazon.com and want to find ways/sites etc to promote it for free.

I already have a site (booksbysheri.webs.com) and a twitter page (I don't have a lot of faith in that one at all, I'm pretty sure I'm talking to myself) and an author page on amazon.com (sheri gill)

Thanks for any advice!

They are both Kindle...but you don't need a Kindle to read them. You can get the "kindle app" for your ipad or your PC to read them. Too bad that's not a better known fact!

I asked not because I am ignorant about ebook formats, but because promotion needs to be tailored, amongst other things,to formats and vendor. So good advice would be based on knowing all of the formats and vendors you plan to use, as well as your genre, reading age, length and connections with any niche interest subjects. Many authors make the mistake of being too indiscriminate in their approach which can waste a lot of effort and even alienate potential readers

So far I only plan to use amazon.com under their ebooks and possibly, at some time, smashwords.com I have yet to look into Smashwords very deeply.

Both of my books for sale are at or under 50,000 words and for sale at 2.99 each. One is teen/tween fiction about a young boy from an abusive home, pulled into a world of dragons and told he is a Knight sent to protect the people of Glendalough.

The other was written after my nephew died in tragic, horrible accident. I wrote a story about a boy who passes from life, but speaks to his family in "whipsers of angles." It was written to give hope and comfort to anyone that has lost someone close to them but is for adults only. It has a mature storyline. Not sex, just not for kids.

Why don't you hang out on a bunch of relevant forums and make your icon the cover of your book?

Also, this isn't free, but I think it's cheap--maybe you could advertise on facebook. That's what I'd do.

One thing you can do on Kindle is make a 'List'--put on your book amongst other similar books. The list will come up when customers use relevant search terms.

Use several sites in conjunction with a blogroll on a personal webpage or blog like you find in wordpress. The blogroll can list things like Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Myspace, and I guess a Kindle link (no experience there) etc. On Facebook, go into the Networked Blogs utility to have your blog entries published to Facebook as you make them from your original blog. On forums, make sure to have a clickable link in your signature, go to websites by authors that interest you and leave comments with a clickable link to your main blog, etc etc etc.

Goodreads dot com is great. You can link your facebook friends etc to Goodreads, and create an author page if you have an ISBN. If you don’t have one, you can still develop your page to turn into a regular author page later.

Everything can link to your main blog/webpage. And everything is published/ announced on Facebook automatically if you connect your blog to Facebook. See what I mean? Those two are very important.

On Facebook, you can put a link on your wall as often as you want to whereever you want to direct someone. Blog, Kindle….

To find followers, look for writers (since they read a lot:) on facebook, add the Publishers/Presses to your 'friends.' There are a lot of them on Facebook! The 'friends' of these presses will be other writers and readers. Add them when Facebook suggests, or go to the friends of the presses and add the people manually. Actually, do both.

About followers, if you write YA, you might look for specific presses and age groups, same with every genre, Sci-fi, mainstream commercial, etc. I've linked to a lot of followers on experimental and literary sites. And small presses tend to be a good source for this type of reader. I also look for poets. And stay away from anything overly trendy. But that's because of what I write.

Make sense? Facebook, Twitter, and popular forums all have high SEO (Search Engine Optimization), so if your blog and writing name are linked to them your audience increases, but try to find friends that make sense, then Facebook will suggest many along those same lines.

On Myspace, you can 'invite' people to read your book, go to your blog, etc. Look for people who seem to have an interest in your genre and style.

On twitter, you can develop you soundbyte skill to catch attention quickly.

Every site should eventually connect to every other site in a strong 'web.'

Since I have a WIP and am not finished, I'm going slowly. But the idea is to build a following and have it in place before I attempt the whole query process.

For you, I imagine you want to spend more time in promotion.

Good luck:)

Sheila, I am enjoying GoodReads very much. I can't find where I can post as an author...could you help? I'm sure it's right in front of me :p
