So, I'm just curious as to what book or thing got you interested in the paranormal romance genre, or even just the romance genre. I'm the kind of person, who doesn't really care to read contemporary romance or anything like that, but I adore paranormal romance. And I started liking it by complete accident. I was browsing a website for a book to read and came upon Kissing Sin by Keri Arthur, which is actually the second in a series. I sat down and started reading it and didn't stop all night. I then realized that I needed the rest of the series and haven't stopped reading paranormal romance since. ;)

Well, I didn't find AW until after I had already started writing. I thought a forum like this would really help. And I was right. This place really helps. :)

I actually didn't know there was a paranormal market until I joined a forum. From there i read some and got hooked.

When I was attending college (nights and weekends) I needed a break--and picked up my first time travel romance. Can't even recall the title or author, but the heroine had the same first name as me.

I was hooked, and even though I now write Christian/sweet romance, I still write some time travel stories.

As a reader, the first PNR I stumbled into was PLAYING WITH FIRE by Gena Showalter. I picked it up because someone said the heroine developed "superhero-like" abilities, and I was all over that. Loved the book, too. :D

I started reading trashy romances in junior high, can't really remember what though. When I started writing it, it always turned into something parnormal, even when I didn't mean for that to happen. I don't think I can write contremporary romance. The first PNR I ever read was Sherrilyn Kenyon's Darkhunter series. Until then, I didn't even know there were PNR books out there, so I was ecstatic! Yes, there were other people who liked this.

Skye O'Malley by Bertrice Small.

My friend found it on a bookshelf in the back of her mom's closet. That bookshelf had very different books on it than the bookshelf that was openly available in her mom's room.

I read it and remembered it and spent years looking for books like it. It had s-e-x in it!!!

(we were 14)

Can we avoid calling them trashy? :) (I'm sure you didn't mean it badly, but I winced when I saw this.)

The first vaguely romantic thing I read was VALLEY OF HORSES by Jean Auel. After that, I was hooked and read a jillion of my cousin's Zebra romances.

The first paranormal I read was Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon's FANTASY LOVER. Totally hooked me on the genre.

Romance novels, gothic in particular, came by way of Mary Stewart, Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney.

Twilight was my first paranormal romance (ducks for cover) but I've since read tons more, most notably Charlaine Harris' Sookie and Harper books, Katie MacAlister, Laurell Hamilton, JR Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, our own Jill Myles, and the Queen Betsy books (Mary Janice Davidson) for a lighter touch. Can't get enough of 'em now.

I think I started with Sherrilyn Kenyon's Darkhunter series, but I went ballistic for paranormal romance with Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. They're hot, action-packed and funny!

Sorry, I should have explained. Most romances are not trashy, and that was not what I meant. I meant I read the really badly written romances (stolen from my mom, so probably published in the 70's) with women swooning, men saving the day, and pretty much no story in between. In fact, it was one cliche after another. Later on, I found REAL romances. Wonderfully written books with great plots and interesting characters.

Woah. Me too. My BFF at the time was into Danielle Steele big time and I just didn't get it. Went to the bookstore to find something different and I stumbled across TW&TD and gave it a try.

Mom hid it. I was twelve. Hiding it only made it more appealing! :evil

I LOVE Woodiwiss! She will always be my first love. My "go to" author for when I simply need to sigh in contentment is Julie Garwood, which is funny because she breaks all the "rules" on writing. Just goes to show you that good writing is good writing.

I gotcha! One of my friends refers to those as "rape her until she likes it" romances. ;)

lol.

BTW: I read Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series after I read Keri Arthur's. I haven't been able to put them down since I started. :)

I was sick for about a week and during that time my sister bought me a book. It too was one of Christina Feehan's, Carpathian Series. I loved it! When I felt better, I went to the store myself and bought the entire series.
