Hiya, quick question :)

I've had a request from a publisher to send my manuscript as a docs and not a docx since the editors can't open docx files.

What exactly does this mean and how do I change it?

I use MS Word 2007 if that helps.

Thanks

When doing "Save as..." you should see a drop-down menu that currently says "Word 2007 .docx" or something like that. Change it to "Word 2003 .doc," and save it that way.

They want a .doc file, not a .docx file. What you want to do is "Save as Microsoft 97-2003 document". It's one of the save options when you click on the top left big button and scroll down to save. Or if you hit the save button, under "Save As Type" save it as "Microsoft 97-2003 document". Then it will be a .doc instead of a .docx

Just wanted to add that in general, .doc files are more widely accepted than .docx files. I would assume that any editor you submit to electronically wants it in this format unless their submission guidelines specifically state that .docx is okay.

Set Word 2007's default save to DOC, and you won't have to worry about it forever after,

Tell the user to download the compatibility pack from microsoft. Unless he/she is running a pirated version which I doubt...

Personally, I wouldn't tell a publisher how to do their job. It's easier just to save it as whatever they want. If they ask for a .doc, just send the .doc.

Exactly. Never tell a publisher or agent what to download or do to be able to open your work.

I've seen most ask for .doc.
