Favourite era?

Dearest AWers, I am conducting a poll out of simple curiosity

The question is simple - what is your favourite historical era, or in other terms, what period do you like to write about?

For me, the medieval period is just my kind of candy. I'm a military history maniac so it caters perfectly to my tastes.

I've oversimplified the eras in order to avoid any possible confusion.

Hi, Eddyz. I also like the medieval period, although I find myself endlessly seeking reference to life and history and habits and details around farming and cities, etc.... to keep things real. It tends to slow me down in a big way. But I certainly love the color, the ribauld nature and lustiness of the period.

If I could do multiple choice like Deleyanlee says... I'd also go for the 1920s. I know that's light-years away from medieval, but I like the tendency toward social formalities and everyday dress, generally. They're both such different times, but I like 'em both anyway.

There we go! New poll, with appropriate choices. I claimed the first four... I'm not much one for the 20th/21st Centuries, but I think I could maybe jump ahead to the 24th/25th and beyond and claim those, too.

I've always been drawn to Ancient Egypt. And the Tudor Era. And to the Titanic, specifically. I've always wondered how certain things get attached to us - I've been facinated by the Titanic since I was a wee little kid.

I like ancient.

But my first love is modern, late 19th Century to WW2 although not everyone is of the opinion that WW2 counts as historical. :rant:

non fiction, I've written on Ancient Greece and Egypt primarily, as well as modern australian up to post modern.

Fiction, I've written ancient, and I'm currently writing modern.

I'm with Ol' Fashioned Girl - it's weird how you become attached. I totally understand what she means! My affinities are ancient egypt, ancient greece, and then the tail end of the Georgian period, up through Edwardian. Some times it's almost like a memory. I've always felt very close to personal, human history somehow - much more so than political

I selected Middle Ages because that is the period I have been researching for my next novel set in the Carolingian Empire of the 9th century.

That is the only reason.

Ancient stories set anywhere throughout Europe and Asia, Late Antiquity western Europe and Constantinople, Norman England, medieval and Crusades periods throughout India and Europe and the Holy Lands, and early Protestant European settings are my attention-getters.

I'm a total Victorian/Modernist freak. My "specialty" in grad school (English, of course!) was Victorian literature and I got a chance to read a lot of the great Victorian writers and some that were lesser known. Not many American 19th century writers, though, so I'm trying to catch up with that right now, since the novel I'm working on is set in 19th century San Francisco.

However, I've also had a love for the Modernists for years, especially Left Bank women writers. I'm always scrounging the used bookstores for treasures like out-of-print poetry by Renee Vivien and Natalie Clifford Barney and Djuna Barnes.

I've always enjoyed history in general but my focuses (foci?) as of late have been English 18th Century, American Cold War early 1950s, turn of the century --19 to 20, and colonialism.

Being a believer in reincarnation, I've always wondered... especially in the instance of the Titanic. I can't stand being in water - don't like swimming pools or being in a boat, especially if it's close to something bigger than it is, like another boat, or a dock, or anything submerged. Gives me a really... creepy feeling. The underside of boats in the water has an 'ick' factor, too.

I picked ancient + early modern + modern. But really I'm a sucker for a well-told story with memorable characters, in any era.

I wonder where prehistory fits in. I've often seen Jean M Auel's books shelved in the Fantasy section, altho AFAIK she sticks mainly to the archaeological evidence.

Love finding documentaries and books on medieval and renaissance periods. I'm also starting to get into the Steampunk scene because of the styles as well as the emphasis on the Victorian period.
