I have the most love for small hosts like Swifthost and Draknet (I've plopped a few sites on them), and the least love for the overgrown big name oversellers. Seems to be a crapshoot with the big ones, either you luck out or it's all headaches.

For domain registration, as long as the domain is not linked to the hosting, whatever you feel comfortable with. I kind of loathe GoDaddy, but they're okay for domain management. As long as you have a fast connection -- the site is a bloody brontosaurus. Network Solutions gave me a scare recently, it was too easy for me to get in and change the info for someone who had forgotten everything (including the fact that the domain was registered with Network Solutions).

i searched about 12 pages and "domain" only came up once in a very specific question. I'm mostly in the domain registration part. I don't want to use a site that has some shady practice of like hiking up the price of your site after a while or tacking on $ if you lapse...

is it hard to swap a domain from one registrar to another? I'm most interested in buying certain domain names and developing them later...

I have linksky for mine - used it to get the domain and host the site. It's been trouble free (well, except for the fact I know little to nothing about creating a decent site!), reasonably priced, and has all kinds of stuff I haven't taken advantage of yet.

Please stay away from GoDaddy!
When I saw that renewal of my three Domain Registrations was going to cost me $50 per year, I went to another DNS agent and signed up for three years at $8 per year. The problem was that the new folks required code numbers from GoDaddy before they could register it, and GoDaddy refused to give them to me, hoping I'd spill into the red zone, the time during which only GoDaddy can sell you a renewal, usually one or two weeks prior to expiration. Then, you have to wait three weeks before you can go elsewhere. I didn't want my site down for three weeks.

I had to go to ICANN and file a complaint.
They contacted GoDaddy, who waited another five days, sending me the data just in the nick of time.

These guys are crooks.
I should have realized that at the outset, when they phoned me and talked for twenty minutes, trying to sell me a web site and all kinds of other stuff.

Can't tell you the name of my current DN Registrar because my house was burglarized and all my possessions, including documents and computers, are gone, and I'm having to do some detective work.

For web hosts, I was lucky enough to find a good one for free.
Again, I can't tell you the name because the DNS expired three weeks ago so I can't access it to find out, but when I do, I'll repost.

I have used Modwest for my domain name and hosting site. I highly recommend it. I have never had problems over the last two years.
