How many chapters are "sample chapters"?

Hi. Sorry if I'm beating at an already dead horse, but an agent just asked me to send him sample chapters and I was wondering how many chapters would be considered too much? Or should I think in terms of the number of pages? If the latter, what would be an acceptable amount of pages? Thanks for the help.

I'd send three chapters, or whatever number of chapters is within approximately 50 pages.

Thanks for the reply. I went with close to fifty pages because my chapters are really short. Thanks again.

How big are pages? When you say fifty pages, do you mean 12500 words, (250 words per page) or ms word pages? (For me about twenty thousand words)

For me, it was ms word pages, formatted with times new roman--which was approximately 15,000 words.

The general rule is three chapters or fifty pages, whichever is less.
