Amazon Kindle Price Drop $189

Browsing for eReaders and noticed that the Kindle dropped in price to $189. Probably in response to the Nook's price drop.

Glad to see the format war among the readers is helping to bring down the prices and grow the e-book market for authors.

Over time, ereader prices would have to reach parity with MP3 players, I'd think, at which time they become a standard household item and not a luxury.

Actually they have to do more than just read text to be standard appliances. Even mpe players can do videos and podcasts and radio.

I believe they were competing with the $149 Kobo ereader. Though the Kobo is extremely simple...no extra gadgets, etc...it is a FINE ereader. Excellent for simply reading books. I think the others have more gadgets...but I think they lowered to compete with Kobo, all the same.

I still like Kobo best. I don't want to do anything else with my ereader but READ. I don't want the extra distractions.

ETA: HAVE I MENTIONED LATELY THAT I LOVE MY KOBO!

I think they're competing with tablet pcs as well. There are lots of tablets coming out this year for around $300, and they just had to cut their prices if they wanted to stay in the market.
Also, the number of ebook manufacturers seems to have risen. I've been surfing and found one in Taiwan, and another in India who manufacture their own line. They've got the hardware, but I bet they're way behind on the software front.
