Hi, all. I have been enjoying this message board without posting for a few weeks, and now I have a practical question. I have written a slightly sophisticated young adult story, and I'd like to find an illustrator to collaborate with. I have no agent or publisher. Which board would be best to make the approach? I don't want to put the same message on all the boards and annoy everyone.

Hi Joseph and welcome to the Cooler.

Try the Children's Writing board to post your question and Story Research to see if any illustrators have offered their services there.

It is my understanding that illustrations usually just go with picture books. I don't think young adult books have pictures unless maybe it's non-fiction.

But even then everything I've read on the subject says you just submit the manuscript and the publisher chooses the illustrator.

My understanding--and I don't write anything illustrated, so it's all just hearsay--is that the publisher generally arranges for the illustrations. It's not unheard of for a book to be submitted with both, with the text bought and the illustrations that went with it not bought.
