We didn't seem to have a thread on HBO's series 'the wire' so I thought I'd start one. If you haven't seen the wire yet, you need it in your life. It is possibly the best tv series I have seen in my 28 years on this earth and that is really saying something!

here's the wiki blurb for the wire:
The Wire is an American television drama series set and produced in Baltimore, Maryland. Created, produced, and primarily written by author and former police reporter David Simon, the series was broadcast by the premium cable network HBO in the United States. The Wire premiered on June 2, 2002 and ended on March 9, 2008. Sixty episodes compose its five seasons.
Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in order: the illegal drug trade, the port system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles. Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."[1]
Despite never seeing a large commercial success or winning major television awards, The Wire has been described by many critics as the greatest television series ever made.[2][3][4][5][6][7] The show is recognized for its realistic portrayal of urban life, its literary ambitions, and its uncommonly deep exploration of sociopolitical themes.

Yeah... it really was an outstanding show. I'm waiting for the series to come out on blu-ray.

As I said in the other threads, The Wire is the best crime drama ever produced. Superior to things like the Sopranos and Law and Order and things of that sort.

Its just a whole 'nother level of crime drama.

Unfortunately, alot of people missed out on it since it was on HBO.

Even though the series didn't catch on as well as it should have, I give HBO huge props for continuing to fund it and give it five seasons.

HBO is the gold standard for T.V. programming IMO.

I thought season 5 was good, but really didn't meet the standard of the previous four series. I don't know what it was about series 5, it just seemed to have something missing that the previous four had.

I liked season 5, but at a certain point it felt a little too much like it was trying to do something memorable. It seemed a little more self-aware somehow than the previous seasons. Which is sort of inevitable. The appeal of the show was how natural it was, and while it didn't get a tremendous amount of mainstream attention, the people watching loved it. That gets back to the writers and suddenly you're not just dealing with your own standards and expectations, but those of an audience as well. And when that audience is trained to expect the unexpected in a true to life environment... and you're trying to resolve the series properly... damn, what a burden.

Still, I thought it was a great season ,and some of my favorite series moments are in Season 5. The penultimate episode alone has Michael's confrontation with Snoop and Marlo's unforgettable "My name was on the street!" outburst. Classic television.
