What makes a Young Adult novel different from an Adult or MG novel? I am writing a humorous sci-fi novel and if it was made into a movie it would easily get a PG or PG-13 rating. Since I am writing backstory right now, I imagine I could go either way. I'll take it wherever it belongs. I just fear that without some direction it will come out in between two of these gategories. If that is good or not, I have no idea. Maybe I just have a fear of unecessary editing?

The age of your characters is a big factor. I think 13-18 years old can be considered YA. Read the stickies on this page, they're full of useful info about the genre.

the stickies helped me to figure out where the YA boundaries are. read them they help. basically YA is teenage characters with teenage problems of some sorts.
Age is a big one, also they're usually coming-of-age stories in some way. Teens with teen issues, basically.
Yup. I have a YA. It's the rating that gave it away. I read a few of the posts and I can confidently make some generallizations. Write my story as it comes. If I need to make it YA add some romantic petting and a nude breast scene. If I want it to be MG or Adult...add in an undeserved spanking. LOL Thanks so much.
