Hello hello!
I'm writing romance, but I want an element of crime. I've had a skim through some of the sticky threads, but I can't find what I'm looking for -
essentially, I'm not really sure where to start.
I know who gets killed, and I know I need to have several characters that have motives. I even have a killer (I think). That's not the hard part.
The hard bit is, I don't want this to overwhelm the romance - it's really romance with just a hint of crime, not the other way around.
I need a simple story line, that I can bring in to give my FMC and MCC something to argue and bond over, which can be neatly tied up at the end, but this is my first time, and I'm having trouble ohow to plan or outline this into the main story.
Here are the details
the father is killed at a house party, in the host's study, by his illegitimate son, who is actually to all appearances, a family friend - no one knows that he is the son.
What the killer does not know, is that the father's legitimate daughter, the main female character, was in the study when the killing takes place. She is hiding under the desk, and had gone into the study to get back some improper letters belonging to a friend, that were held by the host.
So - the daughter is now the next target, because the killer becomes aware that she may have been a witness. Also, once he discovers that she is the legitimate heir, he is filled with rage that she is receiving the money that should rightfully be his.
Now, this is my first attempt, and I want to know if it sounds reasonable.
Are there any glaring holes? Any advice?

) Hopefully if she has a bigger romance-related problem than the murder, then that problem will dominate the story.
