Somebody has to ask, so I'll take a hit for the team. Will you be posting or otherwise offering up your own work so this published potential beta reader has the same chance to reject you?

Maryn, not trying to be nasty, honest

Okay, you've thought better about your question and decided to take it down. But don't let that discourage you. One of the many ways to hook up with a beta reader who totally gets your stuff is to post part at the appropriate SYW board and see what the feedback is like.

You can also read other people's work in your genre and the critique it got, and make private requests of the people you thought gave great feedback.

A whole lot of beta reading that originates at AW never sees this board. If you work at it, and dare to post some of what you write, I bet you can find several qualified betas.

Maryn, giving one from the team as well

I'm not discouraged, you were just right. What I was asking was unfair. Thing is I don't know how else to ask it. I've tried "fishing" for beta readers before and I've only had bad experiences (for example the one who went through my submission marking out all ing words (all ing) telling me I can't use any word that ends in ing). I have a few who I know personally, that I trust, I use them all the time, but none of them are experiences with m/m stuff--and to be truthful neither am I.

So...I guess at this point I have one of two options...to get over myself and suck it up or just deal.

Having a beta mark out your 'ing' words is not necessarily a bad thing. If you were using them a lot then the beta might even have been doing you a favour. Have you read a lot of m/m? that's a great way to gain experience with the genre. And if your betas are good ones, why can't they look over your current work? They should know a good story when they read one, whatever the romantic combination :)

Oh no, I agree. To many is not a good thing. But I am talking ALL ing words. Even in dialog.

I do read m/m romance, it's pretty much the only romance that I read. I've just never written it before and there's a huge difference.
My beta readers probably will get too look over my current work...but to be truthful, I'm not sure how comfortable some of them would be reading m/m romantic scenes. On top of that...it's sometimes just nice to have the opinion of someone with experience in the genre.
Or maybe that's just me :)

I write m/m, and I could take a look at what you've got, but I've been burned from the other side of the beta situation...I've offered to help, and then been handed a pile of total garbage, with obvious typos and grammar errors, hugely illogical plot progression, etc.

So, if you've taken some care with your work and would like a reader, I'd be happy to offer, but it would be with the understanding that I might not finish the job - I might not even finish the first chapter, if it's too painful...

In terms of my credentials - not a lot. I've got a book coming out June 11 (soon, yay!) which you could have a look at here, and I've sold another one to the same publisher with an August publication date. Other than that, I'm still pretty much a rookie myself.

How long is your story? Do you have a blurb?

This particular one isn't done yet. It's down to the wire though, right at 50,000 words. I hope to have it done in the next few weeks, go through it a couple times, then it should be ready to look at.

So, no blurb yet. I usually do those last. Mostly because I hate them so much.

Isn't it odd (and true) how hard the short stuff is? You'd think anybody who can crank out a novel would be fine with a blurb, query, synopsis, etc., but you'd be wrong.

Maryn, who hates the short stuff because she sucks at them

Yup. I can't write short stories either. I've tried and they feel so naked to me that I wind up trashing them.
