Please submit entries in the "submit thread" and only post work there.
Here is where you can talk about the competition, the entries (when posted), ask questions, etc...

Nikee. Copied it to here.1 - can it be an adaptation of the "title" to the news article or are we expected to adapt from the information in the article? because i can just take the title and run with it. i don't need no stinkin' article ;)
2 - just clarifying - 10 properly formatted script pages (not a treatment or synopsis) due by 9/17? and you used the term "the hook" so i'm assuming it's suppose to be the first 10 pages of the script. not something from act 2 (if there was an act 2). am i right?
Joe Calabrese
08-29-2005, 12:06 AM
The article should be the inspiration and I assume the title could inspire you as well. However I warn that most voters may look for at least some small connection to the subject in the article and not just the title.
"The Hook" is the beginning of your script which tells the reader the genre, tone, intros the protagonist and ultimately tells what the basic film is about. It can be up to ten pages. If you can accomplish the hook in less, good for you.
And yes, this should be in the form of a properly formatted screenplay, TV script or Stageplay.
No synopsis or treatments.

Who does the jury of peers consist of? Is it sort of an everyone gets one vote but can't vote for themselves sort of deal?
Joe Calabrese
08-29-2005, 12:27 AM
Yup.
One member, one vote. You can vote for yourself if you want. Bush did.
PS. I can see if a member tries something sneaky.

So essentially the people not submitting an entry are the tie breakers?
NikeeGoddess
08-29-2005, 05:09 AM
yeah, what's the point of having one vote. who is going to spend all that time working on a project and then "not" vote for themselves?! it doesn't really make sense in that respect.
somewhere on another board they gave everyone 3 votes which works to eliminate the non-entrant tie breaker factor.
question: is the voting open to the public? or blind like a survey?.... to eliminate the popularity and "i don't like your posts so i'm not going to vote for you" factors.

Should we include a logline, that way the person reading it has a good idea of where it is supposed to be heading? And with the title should we include the genre, so the reader can determine wether or not the tone is fitting?
Steph

Joe suddenly realizes he's standing in the middle of a minefield. :)
On that "other board" they're using the 1st, 2nd and 3rd vote system for their fun short script contest (1st place vote earns 3 points, 2nd earns 2 points, 3rd earns 1 point).
And author identities are being kept anonymous so there's no "personal" voting, at least in theory.
I mention these options only for discussion's sake, I'm not pushing or pulling one way or the other. But I know I'll be voting for my entry. :)

Not everyone is adept at loglines and it runs the risk of being judged along with the script pages.
I would include a title and genre only.
One vote will work fine since not everyone here will be submitting scripts. I venture that we will have less than a dozen entrants, whereas we have far many more members.
As for making them anonymous so there are no biases, I think that's a good idea.
So, when you are ready to post it, let me know and I will give further instructions to how.
StephieM

"Not everyone is adept at loglines and it runs the risk of being judged along with the script pages."
Me included. Boy that takes a load off. :)
Should we post exactly on the 17th. That way no one can look at someone else's work ahead of time? Not worried about anyone stealing anyone else's idea, I just think it would be kind of weird. Does that make sense?
I think the anonymous thing is a good idea. Not naming any names, but there's been a few members who have been kind of partial to other members. And wether we want to admit it or not, it sometimes becomes personal rather than professional. This way it's fair, and no one can say otherwise.

[I]Should we post exactly on the 17th. That way no one can look at someone else's work ahead of time? Not worried about anyone stealing anyone else's idea, I just think it would be kind of weird. Does that make sense? When you are ready, PM the script pages to me (PM retains all formatting just like a regular post would.) and I will post them under an assumed name with an assigned number. People will vote on Entry 1, 2, 3 and so on.
FYI.
Voting will be for one week, starting the 18th and ending the 25th and then the 2nd task will be announced on the 25th along with the results of week 1.
You will have 2 weeks for the second task, then again 1 week of voting and results.
Then 2 weeks for the last task, 1 week of voting and the winner (and 2nd and 3rd place) will be announced on November 5th.
The working list of prizes is pretty cool so far. We have (so far) the new edition of the HCD, a 1 yr. magazine subscription of your choice, a membership to a top industry database and still waiting to hear, but maybe some software and other cool items.
Good luck to all and please participate.
Win or lose doesn't matter. The purpose of this competition is to give you an idea of how this industry works on the day to day. Task 2, the assignment and 3, the rewrite for hire, will have some real life curve balls thrown in that will make this very interesting.
This will be fun.

Showing my stupidity, here, but then I never claimed to be a genius...
...you're saying you only want the first ten pages, right? Or am I misreading it?
Joe Calabrese
08-30-2005, 02:10 AM
UP TO 10 PAGES.
As long as you got "the hook" and inciting incident in there.
By the end of reading your sample, a reader should be able to:
Know who the protagonist is and at-least hint to what his/her conflict will be.
Know the genre
The tone.
A basic idea of what the story is about.
In Hollywood if a producer's, agent's or competition reader can't find these things by page 10-12, they will not read your script.

Ok, I'm new around here, and found it because I'm insanely intrigued by scriptwriting. I have an intense passion for movies and love reading and writing, and the fusion of these two has created this love for screenwriting.
I am very interested in this contest, but i have a question: is there an age limit on the awards? like i know in some contests, the winner must be 18 or older and I was wondering if a similar requirement applied this one.
I also have another question: should we write the 10 pages like they will be the begining of a much longer film (such as 200 or so pages) or like that is all the audience will know, or simply be the begining of a much longer work which will not be completed? I ask this because I'm not sure how much I should reveal in the begining (because in the overall scheme of a script, while the first ten pages are important, you don't want to spoil all the fun there)
Also, as a side note, Joe, in your profile you talk about hanging out with Kaufman. Are you talking about Charlie Kaufman? (who wrote such amazing screen jems as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation)
Joe Calabrese
09-05-2005, 04:20 PM
No. That guy next to me in the pitcure is Lloyd Kaufman-- Owner of Troma Films and Producer of such fine films as Toxic Avenger, Surf Nazis Must Die, and dozens of other low budget Gore / Bad Taste Horror films that have made him rich beyond our dreams. If you click on my profile, the guy in that picture is Udo Kier (Blade, Shadow of the Vampire, etc)
As for your questions.
No age limit or restrictions.
yes. Your submit the opening, UP TO the 1st 10 pages of a much longer script, OR not, if it is a short film.
**** NOTE****
When you PM me your pages (By midnight Sept 17th), please include:
1) your full name,
2) a title,
3) what article(s) inspired it,
4) genre
5) and if you do not have it here, your regular, working email address.
Thanks.

Ok, I wrote a screenplay. Not sure how good it is, seeing as how it only took me about an hour, from imagining through writing. I do have one problem, though: I typed it in the demo of Movie Magic Screenwriter, and unfortunatly I cant copy & paste out of that or move it to a different type of format. Any suggestions?

I have found a couple of screenplay formatting programs that are cheap or offer a free trial download that should work for 30 days.
Scenewriter Pro, $20 to buy right now. ( http://www.scenewriterpro.com ) This was my first screenplay software and it works pretty good. I doesn't have all of the features but the cost makes it a great deal to start. The biggest pain was the formatting of the printed script was a little funky.
LetterBox from Lucid Ideas. ( http://www.lucid-ideas.com/downld.html )I found this at www.downloads.com (http://www.downloads.com) and know nothing about it except that you can probably use the free trial version for this competition. User reviews say the cut and paste will work. It cost $40.
Good luck to all.

Any suggestions?Aldenard, are any of the "File > Save As" options working in the demo version, can you save as Formatted ASCII or HTML Publishing? ASCII or plain text can be viewed/edited using Notepad and an HTML file can be viewed via Internet Explorer or any other browser, and copy/pasted from there.
If not, as a workaround you might try adding a new printer, generic/plain text to file, e.g.
Start
Settings
Printers and Faxes
Add Printer
Local printer attached to this computer
Use the following port: FILE: (print to file)
Manufacturer: Generic
Printers: Generic / Text Only
If you create this "printer" and select it when printing, you'll be asked to input a filename and a text file will be written to disk. You might have to edit this using Notepad to remove page feed codes, but what's left should be plain text.
If you can't figure something out, email me the SCW file! I'll send you back a plain text file.

Okay, we have quite a few people confirmed, but if you still want to enter the competition, here is what you need to do.
NOTE: If you do not submit in the first task, you cannot submit in any of the other tasks. The competition will be closed after 10pm, September 17th, 2005.
Here's the deal on submitting to the competition.
By entering this competition, you agree:
1. Your work is yours, you own all rights to it and I, AW or any of its
owners and administrators do not make claims to anything submitted on
the site.
2. You agree that your name can be used in a press release announcing
the winners if you are one.
3. You also agree that you are only entering one submission under your
name and any instances of fraud or impersonating another member will be
cause for disqualification.
3. You will not PM or email other members asking to vote for your
submission(s). AW will be monitoring PMs from all entrants.
When you are ready to submit your task. I will need:
- your full name,
- mailing address (only to be used for sending prizes),
- email address.
- Title of your work,
- Genre,
- Which article you were inspired from.
Send to me you first task by email as an attachment (final draft, pdf,
rtf or html file) to info@josephcalabrese.com
by 10pm EST, September 17th.
All scripts go live on the site at the same time, so no advantage to submitting early.
I will upload each submission under the name UltimateSWChallenge and
preface every submission with an entry number. This will be your number
throughout the challenge.
Task 2 will be posted on the 18th and you will have two weeks to complete that assignment.
NOTE: Keep checking the Task 2 thread daily as you may get new instructions during the task.
Keep on your toes as producers change their fragile minds frequently in this industry.
Good luck.

Final Draft has decided to become a sponsor, so...

Still a few days left to enter.

Send in word, rtf, pdf, or html and if the formating is bad I'll fix it, with time given. No guarantees though so try and submit as perfect as possible.
I will make a note to all who vote to weigh less on formatting and more on content.
Hope you win, so you won't have these problems with no name software.

Aldenard, did you find a solution to your problem?
Celtx has an onboard Generate PDF option, this asks you to sign onto your Celtx account which I presume you must have to create on the website? If you don't want to do this then you can always download and install a freeware PDF creator like PrimoPDF or PDF995 which create virtual printers. You can then "print" to a PDF file by selecting the virtual printer instead of your physical printer.
Celtx can also Export Script to either text or HTML file. Both these options work without errors. Formatting may be a little askew but content is very readable.
If you already know this, ignore me.

This part of the contest seems like a good way of finding out if what we write is marketable (or at least interesting), and the other parts of the contest are very neat also, I've never had to work on rewrites or short turnaround projects.
I haven't been here that long, but I think I'd go with trusting everyone. Personally, I want to know where I stand - suck to saleable. Stuffing the ballot box would take away that and while the prizes are great - an honest evaluation of where I am and what I need to improve is worth a lot more.
I think anyone who puts the time in to do this would feel the same. If anyone did cheat - and I really doubt they would - they would lose much more than they gained.
But, if Ramses - I mean Joe - doesn't mind any extra work, then maybe it's safer. But, do I need to worry about my first born, or will it just be hail and locus?

Wow, that was awsome. Finished reading all of the screenplays, and I must say, im impressed that so many varied ideas came from simply 3 news stories. I'm still trying to decide who to vote for though. I'm wondering, will there be a thread to discuss the screenplays themselves? Because several of them I would like tot alk to their creator about; i realize this may not be possible during the voting week, but after i would really like to converse with the other participants.

I will still announce the 2nd task on this Sunday, September 25th and you will still have the full two weeks to perform that task.
Voting should be easier with the 2nd task since you will only need to submit one page (will explain all on Sunday)
I ask that you, without mentioning names or script preferences, please advertise in the other forum rooms for members to vote. Maybe add it to your signature as well.

The suspense is killing me ...

What's worse is that we can't discuss them...

My thoughts exactly. I barely know what to do with myself. I can't stop logging on, as if by some miracle it's really Oct 1. and somehow I slept through it all. I wish. :)
Let me just say, you are not alone.

I'm not giving anything away by saying this...
As I was reading the entries I scribbled some notes on each. Just basic thoughts, what worked for me, what didn't work, what I liked, what I didn't much like, etc. Personal preference calls, as always. The comments helped to decide my votes.
I'll maybe post these after Task 1 results are announced (if that's OK, Joe?).
I don't know if anyone else intends to do the same. But if you've already voted and are nervously fidgeting waiting for the results, then possibly you have some time to kill... And who knows, reader comments might be a valuable supplement to votes? Followed by some informal forum discussion, maybe?
Shrug, I'm just saying. Don't feel obliged or anything.

That's a good idea dp. Though I think if anyone wants their script pages critiqued they should post them after the voting closes. That way we don't have a long and confused thread of different critiques. :)

I just sent in my vote. I read every screenplay from start to finish. For me, it was a tough call between three of the entrys; but I only get one vote so I had to pick one.
Congratulations to everyone who entered.

i had a hard time reading some of them to the end. of course it's difficult for anyone to believe that "their" script would be one of these but the opening to a feature needs to have some pop/hook/cliffhanger/etc.... oh, shut my mouth - i'll wait for commentaries later to go on.
joe - nice move on the task 2 ;) i used to be a sprinter but, i did better with the hurdles. i love bumps on the road. so much more exciting.

Okay, the votes are in and task one is officially over.
Also, entrants, voters, members and lurkers can openly discuss the task 1 entries. I opened up the task 1 thread so you can all post there.
I won't divulge results because last place in task 1 can still win if the votes come in good on subsequent tasks, but I do have to say that everyone did a great job and you should all be proud of your accomplishment.
