Open office driving me nuts-help please

I'm trying to move my novel over from appleworks to open office via copy paste. I set the title page, headers, and text body fine. But that darn 'default' setting keeps popping up-right now it's acting like a footer. Other times it just replaces text body again and messes up the formatting and fonts. How do I get rid of it?

Not sure what you mean by "default" setting, but if you're copy&Pasting, you should paste it using the "Paste Without Formatting," then it strips out all the Appleworks stuff and places it in your OO doc cleanly.

Top left of the screen there is a scroll down menu right under the tools with labels: title, default, header 1 and so on, as well as text body with times new roman font(which is what I want.) It keeps reverting to default, helvetica font. Rather than vanish when I reset it gets shoved to the bottom of the page.
I'm a bit mystified over the font change since it's set to times new roman in both although I can see why other format may get lost.

Too bad one can't find books on 'free software' instructions. By the time I figure it all out I might be able to write one!

Don't use copy and paste; export to .rtf from AppleWorks.

Import the .rtf to OpenOffice.

Have you tried setting your "default" to the font you want it to be in? Then it won't matter much if it continues to reset to "default". On mine, you change that in Tools>Options>Open Office.ord Writer>Basic Fonts (Western)

Another option is to email the appleworks file to yourself as .rtf. Open the file from your email with Open Office and save it that way.

Or if you feel the need to copy paste, hold ctrl+shift+V to do it.

Otherwise, save the file as an RTF and then open it with Open.

The way those two do formatting is too different for this to work.

Save the file as TEXT (.TXT) or RTF and then open it in OO and it will be a lot easier on you.

So far I've had to stick to copy pasting because I only have access to the macbook. The old Imac is out of reach on the weekends. So who knew, if you drag the appleworks app over from a ppc to an intel mac it would lose the ability to save to anything but a cwk doc? :gone:

Aack. The menu shrank! :Wha:

Nuts. If I copy paste without formatting I get the right font but a big block of text. If I paste with formatting I lose the font but keep the paragraphs. Oh well.
