I hope this is the right place to post this. Since I am something of a "newbie," I thought so.

---

I am curious: Why do you guys think it's so difficult for some folks to write?

I don't mean the technical act. I mean, why do you guys think that, way down, people get butterflies so terribly that it's hard for them to write?

Of course, I wonder about this for myself. I used to write professionally some years ago. I wrote for a few magazines and newspapers and a regional publication here or there. Though I didn't make much money, I feel I did 'okay.'

But throughout that time, each article led to knots in my stomach and it seemed like the more pain I felt during the act, the better the work.

Two days ago, I dreamt of a fictional story I would like to write. I have never really been much of a fiction writer, but this story rings strong with me. I think it's a decent story with a lot of facets to explore. I have characters names, motivations, and I have a story premise. I have never gotten this far in planning fiction.

Why is it that I can't write much of it down? And, when I do, why can't I stop the butterflies. Agh!

What makes me so completely opposite from the person who happily writes "fan fiction" that may never be read by anyone, much less see publishing beyond his journal?

What is it? Why is this so hard?

:hi: Hi Tcv,

Don't know why it is for sure that you can't let your words flow freely, even though it does seems you have a strong desire to put your thoughts into work.
I HAVE to write, couldn't stop if I wanted to. The difference may be, that I allow myself to play with words also, as well as creating more serious work. That playtime frees me up from taking myself too seriously, then once the words start to flow, sooner or later I finally pull something of a more serious tone together, but always returning to time for word "play" as well.

Welcome, tcv! Maybe you're just trying to perfect it too soon. Getting your thoughts and words down, I mean. Try letting it flow. Don't worry about sentence structure, grammar, spelling, just get those thoughts down. Maybe that would help you overcome those "butterflies." Afterward, then you go back and do the clean-up.

I would love to be able to "play". ::sigh:: I guess I am simply scared that it ain't gonna come out right. So, I get very nervous about all of it. I procrastinate. I reason that I "don't know where to start," but they I don't start. I can't imagine how it will turn out, so I don't start.

Welcome :welcome:

tcv, you're not alone. I'm trying to work up the nerve to write a fiction story which I know will leave me turned inside out and raw. The best advice I've been given: Just write it anyway.
