So the first 8 pages of my book does not need to be numbered or have my author name or title name up top... the rest of the book that follows the first 8 pages does because that main part is the actual "book" that people read.

How can I use the header and footer so that it only applies to the "book" part and not the first 8 pages (titles, dedication, acknowledgment, etc.)?

Every time I use the header/footer it applies to the entire piece of work of which I don't want it to. I need to have the right format so I can self-publish and make it look good.

Thanks for any help. I have the old MS Word not the bluish, 2007 onward.

Are you familiar with breaks?

You want to put a break between your first section (the first 8 pages) and the second section. Then when you go to View > Header and Footer and the toolbar pops up, you want to find the icon for "break link/link to previous" (use the tool tips to find it). Then you can have two section with their own headers, or one with a header and one without.

Does that makes sense? It's a little hard to explain without doing a step-by-step instruction.

You want to use Sections.

You will find them in the Insert menu. A dialog when you insert a section asks you about headers/footers.

You will have one section for the first 8 pages, with a special header/footer for that section, and one for the rest of the ms.

The section marker on the page (a section can start at the top of a page, or in the page, or even at the bottom( is hard to see, and depends on the version of MSWord you are using; you may need to make sure that the Show Invisibles setting that shows things like paragraph marks is on.

Here's the instructions from Word help:

A document must first be divided into sections (section: A portion of a document in which you set certain page formatting options. You create a new section when you want to change such properties as line numbering, number of columns, or headers and footers.) in order to create a different header or footer (header and footer: A header, which can consist of text or graphics, appears at the top of every page in a section. A footer appears at the bottom of every page. Headers and footers often contain page numbers, chapter titles, dates, and author names.) for part of a document.

  1. If you haven't done so already, insert a section break (section break: A mark you insert to show the end of a section. A section break stores the section formatting elements, such as the margins, page orientation, headers and footers, and sequence of page numbers.) where you want to start a new section that contains a different header or footer.
How?

  1. Click where you want to insert a section break (section break: A mark you insert to show the end of a section. A section break stores the section formatting elements, such as the margins, page orientation, headers and footers, and sequence of page numbers.).
  2. On the Insert menu, click Break.
  3. Under Section break types, click the option that describes where you want the new section (section: A portion of a document in which you set certain page formatting options. You create a new section when you want to change such properties as line numbering, number of columns, or headers and footers.) to begin.

  1. Click in the section for which you want to create a different header or footer.
  2. On the View menu, click Header and Footer.
  3. On the Header and Footer toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.), click Link to Previous
    ZA006044863.gif
to break the connection between the header and footer in the current section and the previous section.
Microsoft Word no longer displays "Same as Previous" in the upper-right corner of the header or footer.

  1. Change the existing header or footer, or create a new one for this section.

Thanks a lot both of you! I'm going to try these instructions sometime today.

Later on... well I tried it and with a ton of experimentation I got it. It was tough for some reason... the footer/page numbers took time to get dialed in.

Here are some links for others who may have troubles with section breaks/headers & footers:
