I should repeat what my agent said to me about those numbers when she visited the site:

ALWAYS look at the lowest numbers. The high dollar counts reflect writers who have a large fan base, a long track record of sales, their agents cutting a sharp deal, and other factors.

The lowest numbers are a more realistic expectation for new writers.

Still, it can be a pretty good chunk of change! :D

I have a running argument with a friend about how much money a writer makes. He seems to think making any money is impossible. I tell him that you can actually live off of it if you are prolific and write the sort of writing that gets published. I can show this to him. He'll probably now think all writers are millionaires.

He can probably show you more writers who don't make money (grin). Publishing is just the start - you have to be in a genre that is selling like cats and dogs, and often the publisher's own popularity can play into the equation. My own opinion is that only a thin percentage of writers can actually make enough money to live on in the e-book space - and I'm talking single digits here.
