You can't pay for copyright. You own the copyright as soon as you write something. But you can register the copyright you already own.

A publisher that makes you register the copyright is, at best, a fly by night operation.

You knew what I meant. As for fly by night, I know of two e presses who are successful who have this in their contracts. They are not fly by night.

It is very normal in ebooks. Naturally, all fly-by-nights would expect the author to do this, but it is accepted practice in ebooks.

There's a registration clause in my contract and it was never put to use. Maybe 'cause I'm overseas, I don't know. I don't know anyone at my publisher who's ever had to worry about this.

Depends on who publishes the e-book. If you have to pay this, it's a fly by night, crappy deal, no matter where or how the book is published.

Publishers usually pay everything and you for producing the book. If you find anything on a publishers site that says pay for this or something-run.

I've never heard this before to be honest.

After doing my own research, it is common with some e book pubs as Soccer Mom stated.

It is normal for epublishers not to pay to register copyright, but I would avoid one that mandated that the author must register copyright themself. The contract should IMHO permit the author (who may well not be American) to not register copyright at all.

Agreed. It shouldn't be a mandate.
