Only 1 pro anthology currently open

According to Duotrope, there's only 1 pro-paying anthology currently open... (and I've already got a sub out there.)

Surely that can't be right? If so, this is the worst time for open high-paying anthos I can remember in nearly 20 years of writing. Have they all gone invitation only? Or has the pro-antho market collapsed?

Any thoughts?

I see one or two anthologies a month released in the SF/F and romance genres, so I don't think the anthology market has collapsed. But I believe most of them are invitation only, with several best-sellers headlining the antho for better marketability.

I don't follow anthology markets closely, but it does seem there aren't many open anthologies around just now.

You're correct about the current dearth of pro paying anthologies but there are several open submission calls on Duotrope that pay decent semi-pro rates, some 5 cents a word. Not quite pro but not bad either.

The trick is this:

Find recent anthologies in your genre.

Write to the editors of those anthologies and ask if they're working on one right now.

Include an SASE.

Been there, done that... it even worked a couple of times.

But at the moment everything seems to be very quiet.
