Lena Horne, the ground-breaking singer, actress and civil rights activist who, in 1942, became the first African-American performer to be put under contract by a major studio, died on Sunday, May 9, at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. She was 92.

My mother saw her back in the 1940s. Had no idea where her gangster boyfriend was taking her, and found herself in a small little jewelbox of a nightclub where the most gorgeous Black woman in the world was singing like an angel, accompanied by piano only, of course with no mic.
