I'm looking for a particular kind of book to read next as a reference point. I was wondering if any of you folks could help me. What I'm searching for is:

a contemporary novel (from the past 10 years)
could be literary OR Young Adult
that is predominantly told from the third-person perspective (could switch between that and first-person, though)
that deals with the traditional "boy meets girl, boy loses girl" formula in a clever and inventive way

What I'm thinking of would sort of be the literary equivalent to "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" or "500 Days of Summer," or the graphic novel "Blankets" by Craig Thompson, if any of you are familiar with those.

Someone in another thread suggested "Looking for Alaska," which I checked out today, but I'm still looking to hear other suggestions. And stubbornly hoping for something in the 3rd person.

Thanks for the help!

Cheering you all on!
I'm sure someone will come along to give you some suggestions, since contemporary is not my forte, but just a note that being YA does not exclude being literary

I know, I didn't mean it in an exclusionary way...more like "where it's gonna be filed at the bookstore/library."

Looking for Alaska is good, except it's first person.

(which I love, but the OP wants 3rd)

You mentioned graphic novels -- Gothic Sports has a similar sort of theme, wherein the boy does something terribly and loses the girl. It's three volumes, and isn't focused on the relationship so much as the team building, but it's worth flipping through if they carry it locally. Otherwise, I had no idea how few of the YA books I've amassed were 3rd person.
