Okay, here's the deal. I wrote a book, I sent it off to agents. Got good responses with requests for a fair amount of fulls and partials. But then the market flooded with books that are really similar to mine. Agents who rejected the full said either the hook wasn't strong enough, or they already have clients who write along similar themes. They all liked my writing and my voice. Slowly, the number of agents reading the full dwindled from 15 to 3 left. One of them is my dream agent and she's had the full for two months now.

While I was waiting, I started working on my next book. But then I had an epiphany. So I've decided to do a major rewrite to make the hook stronger, and to make it less similar to the books that have recently sold. The whole second half of the book is completely different now.

I think it has a better chance of selling to publishers, but what do I do about those three agents who are still considering the old version? My gut is telling me to email those agents, and tell them I'm doing a major rewrite, and can I pull it from consideration until I'm done. But what if they don't like the changes I'm making?

What would you do?

I'm not you and I'm not in your position, but yes, I'd write to them and explain what I'd done, and why. They surely can't see this as a negative. Just the opposite.

Tough call. Usually I'd advise no since you're still revising, and it looks unprofessional to yank a ms. that way, but if you had 15 full requests and the main reason for rejection was that it was too similar to what's out there, an email probably can't hurt. There's something in the ms. that agents are liking, but something that's also holding you back. Fix that, and you probably have a good shot at landing the book.

You're doing the work anyway, so you really don't have much to lose. I'd suggest phrasing your email in positive light instead of negative. Instead of "I'm revising this because agents are telling me XYZ won't sell right now" do it more like "I'm revising to increase the book's marketability in today's crowed marketplace for this genre" type deals (though probably not those exact words, LOL. Something better and in your voice)

It is a tough call, but a lot of books have been rejected by twelve agents or more, then accepted by one agent, and turned into a major bestseller.

I would wait for the rejection instead of taking myself out of the game. What if the agent is reading your work and receive the letter? She might think you're a flake. Let them say no and then send out your revised work with the stronger hook.

First, I have to say, I envy your position. To have 15 agents request fulls, is incredible. You must have an excellent book on your hands.
I agree with Xvee. Wait for the rejection if it comes. If the agent accepts the story as is, you may want to mention that you've written an alternate ending, in case the original doesn't sell.
If you are rejected, re-submit the revised MS to all 15 agents. The worst they can do is say "No".

Thank you everyone! Not decided what I'm going to do just yet. It's not only an alternate ending, the MC is different, although some of the plotlines in the first half are the same. And Julie, I did ask something similar a month ago, but the question was whether I should go ahead and make the changes or lock it away and focus on my WIP. Since then, some rejections have come in and I've decided to go ahead with the changes :)
