Hello =)
I'm a bit stuck on how to define the age group for my book. I've put an estimate of ages between 10-14. Would this be children or young adult? There's no swearing, sex, drugs, although some scenes can be a bit violent :)

Thanks for reading

At Barnes and Noble, the MGs are 7-12, and the YA is 12-17. It seems your estimate it right there in the middle. The Goose Girl is one book that was, at one point, shelved in MG, but has since been moved to YA. The author's other books remained in MG. Maybe you'll just be able to pick one....?

Welcome to AW.

Check out the Writing for Kids and Young Adult sections here. Read all the stickies.

You need to decide if your novel is going to be targeted as Middle Grade or Young Adult. Generally, MG is for kids 8-12.

10-14 is considered Upper Middle Grade. That's the range for my book, actually :) It straddles both age groups, but it usually kept/shelved/associated with the Middle Grade books.

In England, it'd probably be down as 'young teenagers'.

Sounds like it a "tweener" novel, which are common, a genre all their own, and often sell very well.
