I'm new here and I've been lurking in various sections. I read and write romance but my ideas are mainly futuristic or fantasy but I don't feel comfortable writing about certain things. I prefer to give my characters a little privacy and I am unable to write swear words.

Can I have write for the adult market without being explicit? Or would I be better off in the YA market?

The romance market has changed a lot over the past 12 years when I picked up my first regency looking for nice happy endings after reading, The Mill on the Floss, which made me very angry at George Elliot for her unhappy ending.

Welcome to AW! You can write anything you want to and you should definitely write things you feel comfortable writing. Have you heard of sweet romances? (Google "sweet romance genre") The sex is usually off-screen if there is sex in sweet romances.

I haven't heard of fantasy, sci-fi, or paranormal sweet romances--only contemporary--but why not? Also, they may be out there and I just don't know about them. I don't really read sweet romances/know an awful lot about them. I just know they exist. :)

i totally sure there is a market for books written for adults about romance.

all the paranormal romance and fantasy romance i have read is a bit explicit.

maybe find what you're thinking of in a book on Amazon and then look at the suggested similar titles. that's how i choose what i plan to read next...

you could try YA in a short story. before the big commitment of a novel?

keep in mind that YA has those nuances of Youth. just writing a censored romance doesn't mean it will resound with 15 to 25 year olds...

Welcome to the boards and best wishes with your writing!

Thanks.

I've read a lot of paranormal and science fiction romance. And everything is very detailed. That's why I was wondering if I wanted to keep things sweeter if I should move my audience from adult to YA.

I looked up "sweet romance" and I found one author I do like to read that writes paranormal and her's are not so graphic.

As for young adult, I was thinking of that age group because my MCs are usually younger and I think the teen years would be fun to write about. There is so much potential and yet so much drama and heartache about that period in time.

Besides romance, I read Manga and the stories coming out of Japan are moving especially in the teen relationship category. The teens over there have a lot more freedom and responsibility than teens do here.

That's why I was thinking YA instead of Romance. I'd like to write sweet romance for adults but I don't think anyone is buying science fiction/fantasy in that category because I don't see it on the shelf.

Thanks for listening. I've got a lot to think about.

I read a lot of paranormal romance and I agree, it is pretty steamy. No tto say you couldn't write a "sweet" one, but not sure how hard of a sell it would be. I would definitely look into YA. YA paranormal romance seems to be very big at the moment, a lot of adults read them as well.

Thanks, Nicole. That is what I was thinking. I was hoping that I was on the right track.

Some publishers specialize in G or PG rated romance. One of mine, Desert Breeze, has guidelines that say so, though they are not aimed at the YA market but adults. You might take a peek at their web site.

I've been very pleased with the house, my third small press, and with the people. The distribution of the e-books is also growing nicely, which is important if you're aiming your work toward small presses.

Hope this helps.
