So tomorrow I'm launching my novel Shade Fright in the tiny prairie metropolis of Saskatoon. (Population 250,000)

I'm doing a reading and signing and mingly thing - anyway, I've been speaking in front of large groups for two decades but oddly, I've got the angst on this one. (People show up to these things, right?)

I don't want to read too long a chapter so I'm debating whether it should be an introductory chapter or something that is smack dab in the middle of the action.

What are everyone's thoughts?

CGS on the debut day!

How about reading a little from the beginning and then a particularly sweet bit from later on? If you have a sweet and humorous bit, that would be great -- I think the audience always likes an excuse to laugh.

Are you serving chocolate?

Chocolate? Oh crap - should I? UGH! I'm not sure what the etiquette is for these things. So are you saying I should read excerpts as opposed to a whole chapter? (I actually spent a bit of time on the weekend watching readings on YouTube. I am such a tourist!)

Is it a launch, proper, or is it a reading?

If it's a launch (ie, family and friends, invited crowd, etc), keep the reading to an absolute minimum -- grab the mic, say a few thank yous, read a page or two, get to the signing table.

Yep. it's a launch so I've got people coming from my day job and friends, etc. I have a very very short chapter I think I'll read and then leave it at that. The good news is this bookstore is probably the best one in the city so it's always pretty busy. The bad news is I've been in there many times to see authors holding a lonely vigil at their signing table. The better news is it starts at 7:30 PM and they close at 9:00 PM so I don't have to hang around if things go south ;)

Thanks for the feedback! Presumably I will get better at this in the future.
