Know any others?

Ignoring the alarming odds, I've begun sub'ing short stories to mags like these. Know any other print mags that are similar in regards to reputation, pay, and circulation? Others I'm familiar with are:

- Tin House
- Harper's

Thanks and good luck with your own subs. And if you have any additional info like names of editors to sub to, slants of pub's, average length of response times, etc, please include that too.

The Atlantic's response time seems to be between 1.5 and 2 months, based on my own experience. The Paris Review's is between 2-3 months. And The New Yorker's is ... ;-)

... Glimmer Train seems cool and has a very good rep like you say and they also pay well as well, but:

There's a $15 reading fee I don't much care for :-(
They get 40,000 submissions a year according to their website.
Multiplied by 15 that adds up to $600,000 a year in revenue, at minimum.
Somehow that just doesn't sit well with me.

Thanks for mentioning the mag, though.

They pay up to $2000 for some stories.

One Story has a good reputation, but lousy pay ($100). The good thing is that if your story is accepted by them, the story appears on its own in a small booklet rather than crammed in a journal with a bunch of other stories.

There are no reading fees for standard submissions. They only charge for contest entry submissions.

... you'e right. The writing guidelines are a bit confusing, is my excuse ;-)

    • January: Very Short Fiction Award (Up to 3,000 words) and Standard
    • February: Short Story Award for New Writers
    • March: Fiction Open (2,000 to 20,000 wds)
    • April: Family Matters and Standard
    • May: Short Story Award for New Writers
    • June: Fiction Open (2,000 to 20,000 wds)
    • July: Very Short Fiction Award (Up to 3,000 words) and Standard
    • August: Short Story Award for New Writers
    • September: Fiction Open (2,000 to 20,000 wds)
    • October: Family Matters and Standard
    • November: Short Story Award for New Writers
    • December: Fiction Open (2,000 to 20,000 wds)

Clicking 'Standard' brings one to the page where there is a $0 reading fee. Only 4 months of the year where this option is offered. But that's definitely reasonable. So I'll give Glimmer Train a passing grade as such and get a story over them before this month's deadline. Thnx.

The other mags mentioned above sound interesting, too. Will check out their guidelines. Thnx. I've heard of Zoetrope, but not of the others. (Duotrope is indeed a fine resource.)

GT has open submission about four times a year. I believe April is one of them so you might check their website.
