I know there is a thread about Publish America. But I can't find it. From what I gather is few people think good things about them.

Anyone have something good to say? They initially pay 8% royalties. Is that a good royalty? They say they give advances. Do they mean that one dollar they send you? Do they ever allow you to have a binding contract for only 6 months just in case you don't like what they are doing for you?

Do not sign it. Seriously. The best it will do will waste vast amounts of your time and hair-tearing.

You'll notice how quickly the responses to your query are being answered.
And everyone agrees.

That should tell you something. Good luck.

April Fools Day was yesterday. But in case you're being serious, read the threads posted here and at Preditors and Editors (www.pred-ed.com)

What ever you do, DO NOT SIGN THAT CONTRACT. Burn it, tear it up, throw it away, use it to line your cat's litter tray: but DO NOT SIGN IT.

If PA could, they'd send us all unsolicited contracts. You don't even need to have a book to publish with them.

You'll be lucky if you make more than that $1. Plus that contract is locked for 7 years with no hope of negotiation. At all.

And if you read that contract, you'll notice that just about everything provided by a reputable commercial publisher is at PA's discretion. Meaning they don't have to do squat to promote, market, and sell your book. At all. It's all dumped on your lap and if you even think of asking for assistance from them, you'll be berated and an apology will be demanded from you.

If you do sign and have any questions? Don't even think about asking them on their members' forums. Posts are regularly deleted and accounts closed whenever somebody "gets out of line".

If you have already signed? Lord help you.

As a person who didn't know better and before there was a thread about PA here, all I can say is run. Tear up the piece of paper and be grateful you didn't sign it. A bad publisher is absolutely far worse than no publisher at all. This is me speaking from experience.

Dude, seriously, this is a joke, right?

Anytime you have to start a request for information by acknowledging that there's a ton of bad reputation and asking for anyone whose got a glimmer of something good, this should tell you something. The PA authors that find their way here - and stay - mostly call themselves refugees (escapees). That should tell you something, too.

NO they will not negotiate the contract to give you a better advance. NO they will not let you off after 6mo. if you don't like what they're doing. They do, on occasion, tell their authors who have stopped drinking the Kool-Aid, that they'll let them out of their contracts IF they buy more of their own books.

They don't have a good relationship with any bookstore, and right now, even their long time supporters can't seem to find their books for sale through any major chain (mysteriously disappearing ISBN numbers). You'll have to beg for shelf space IF you get it at all. You'll have to fight for book signings. It's not a legitimate publishing credit, but once they've printed your book, you've burned it. 1st rights are gone.

GO READ THE PA THREADS NOW!!! GO!

Thank You guys. When no one can think of even one good thing to say it tells me something about them.
I was surprised at how quickly they replied to my query. Then they also said for me to make sure my book is a minimum of 4000 words. given my book is 80,000 words it makes me think they didn't even look at it.
Thanks again,
Todd

Just in case you're not getting the message:

I know how you feel right now. You've been offered a contract and it's soooooooo hard to let it go because... well... you want to be published. You want to have 'that feeling', a validation of all your hard work. You want to tell your friends and family, "Look! I made it!"

I have been where you are.

But I signed the contract anyway.

Take my word for it, please, if you won't listen to anyone else. I don't even know who of those who posted above me has any personal experience with PA... I do.

I am in the process of getting my rights back - who knows if I'll be successful. But I wrote another novel and I've got a real, live, honest-to-goodness agent now.

Please listen to me:

DO NOT SIGN THAT CONTRACT.

Throw it away.

There is life after PA, yes. But it's so much sweeter without the stench of their crap in it.

Please.

Very good, Todd.

Step away from PA but please do hang around here and learn about findinig agents and publishers and writing queries, and work on your writing with us.

Okay, if you're serious, my opinion of PA would be much improved if they did several things.

1) Were honest about being a vanity press. What I got from PA was a bound manuscript with cover art. But, because it is now "published" and still under contract, I cannot do a thing further with it, and likely won't be able to later.
2) Told me before I signed the contract that my 144-page novella would list for $26 in softcover. My book isn't worth even half that.
3) Admitted that being listed on a traditional bookstore's website is not the same as being "sold in stores."
4) Acknowledged that ALL marketing and publicity would be up to me. Instead, they made it sound as if they were spending all night and day promoting my book.
5) Had any standards at all about what they publish, or even read the books all the way through.

These are my chief complaints. Other people have others. Yes, they do pay the $1. No, they do not charge to develop the cover art. You can pay them to edit your book or you can edit it yourself for free. I paid about $100 to buy 10 copies of my own book when it was on sale, and that is all the money they got from me, but only because I didn't believe them when they said I could make millions if I bought a bagillion copies of my book and did the legwork myself.

If what you want is a souvenir to sit on your shelf, you COULD go with PA, but there are other vanity presses out there that will do the same thing without putting stars in your eyes and your book will cost a lot less.

WOW!!! 20 responses and only 21 veiws.
Thanks again. It is tempting to have them publish a book just so you can tell your friends you did it.
Chris I'm sorry to hear about your experiance. I'm glad you are getting your rights back.

Welcome, Todd. I've moved your post to the Publish America forum. Please take the time to look around and read up on why PA is one to both avoid and warn your friends about.

Cheering you all on!
The good news, Todd, is that it doesn't mean anything bad about your novel. PA doesn't discriminate between the good or the bad. They'll offer a contract to anyone.

Here's a fun exercise: do a google search for "Publish America." Compare it to a google search of, say, "Random House." Now, add the word "scam" for each and do the searches again.

It's a depressing thing, hearing that a publisher that wants your book is bad news. But as has been said, you'll regret it if you sign that contract. Truly.

Some "defenders of the faith" are named in that article. Do a google search on them. Or look for their books at Amazon.

Congratulations on writing a book. Congratulations on posting here and saving yourself from a horrible mistake. :)
