I've noticed that after I read a short story by Theodore Sturgeon, I write scenes better and quicker. Is this because reading requires imagining the scene, or is it that Sturgeon is a great writer and reading good writing makes one a better writer?

Some people never read in their lives like Steven Spielberg and still managed to get good working screenplays such as Jaws. I mean, the guy was rewriting the script during the set of the movie! You need to be talented to direct and rewrite the script according to the involved budget or technical problems.

Some people learn from the masters and from the good screenplays. (For the most of us), which means we never stop learning or improving our skills. Reading scripts, novels, plays, any material will help you for sure.

Kitchen table, parked in front of the computer.
I like to read.

Currently I'm into Raymond E. Fiest.
Fun, fast moving stories, great characters.
It is VERY educational to see how he develops his characters and story.

Reading good books shows us how to create story.
It's one thing to study screenwriting books and learn the hows, why's, what's and where for's, but you also need to learn how to implement them, see them in action. That means reading.

Every writer should have read at least one or two of the classics to understand basic story structure and style.

Also reading novels opens up the door for adaptations..............maybe.

HEY, lay off Fiest!!!!!!!
HE'S MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
