Soulless by Gale Carringer.

It's Steampunk, complete with paranormal, scientists, intrigue, violence and romance. The sequel is due out in the next couple of months, too.

Are gay romances okay? I've read some good ebooks and short stories like that, often the scientist is paired with a non-scientist like a fighter (appropriate for a story with violence) or an artist, or person interested in marketing. Or sometimes instead of a literal scientist you have a magic researcher, a 'fantasy scientist'.

Soulless was very well done. It was one of the more enjoyable books I've read recently.

You might try Jayne Ann Krentz, Absolutely Positively. And maybe Deep Waters, though that's further off the mark.
