For plot reasons in a story I'm working on, I'd like to use the names of several very well-known companies as character names. Would this be at all possible? It's set a fair amount of time (maybe fifty years) into a post-apocalyptic future, and the characters in question have chosen names for themselves off of "old" (read: present day) product labels, like Pepsi, Nutella, Hershey('s), Nathan('s Hot Dogs), Tide (Laundry Soap) etc.

I'm thinking that Tide and Nathan should be fine for sure, since they're legitimate words/names on their own. And I could shorten the names to Pep, Tella, or something, if I have to or if it would make things easier. But I'm kind of guessing I'd have to contact the Pepsi company, Nutella, etc., if I wanted to use their full product name? And what might their stipulations be if they even allow it?

No idea but in Jennifer Government by Max Barry, people assume the names of their employers as their last name (Hack Nike, Hayley McDonald's, etc).

Hm. I wonder how the logistics of something like that works. Google didn't turn up much for me.

I have a character whose last name was Kotex. I picked that name as a way of explaining why she married in her teens. (I'm reasonable sure its not a real surname, which is good since I have no interest in mocking the plight of any actual Kotex clan.) I'll be very surprised if I find out it is an issue. I think that as long as you're writing fiction, you can say what you want and they don't have to like it.

I don't see a legal issue with it, if that's what you mean. Especially if part of the storyline is that people intentionally names their children after products.

BTW, I once met a clerk in CVS named laToshiba - no lie.

I think it sounds like a great concept and I know it's been done before.

Ford Prefect anyone?

Oh wow. Massive, MASSIVE fail on my part. How the blazes did I forget Ford?
