What can I say? I am a sucker his work and book illustrations in general, so I kinda find it a pity that nowadays illustrations have fallen out of flavor but I can see why, nonetheless. Anyhow, I wanted to share, commemorate and why not say it out loud? embrace the work of this artist who was neither a painter nor a writer, but flirthed both ways.

Doré's works have fallen out of favor? Since when? He was a magnificent engraver, the Michelangelo of that craft. I've never seen anyone bash his work.

I meant, quality illustration for books in general. Not Doré, Doré, personally is immortal.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. But, in this context, the answer is simple:

EXPENSE.

We can all thank the bean-counters for this.

... ever since joining here I've had a Gustave illustration as my CP user picture. It's from the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. He illustrated the entire work. I like his illustrations too :-)

I was exposed to Doré's work from an illustrated edition of The Divine Comedy, and I have to agree that his illustrations are amazing.
