I have a huge problem. My computer was returned to me yesterday (I have Vista) and my Internet Explorer security has gone totally neurotic. It blocks things that it never used to. It keeps saying, "To help protect your security, IE has blocked this website from displaying content with security certificate errors. Click here for options..." but this never happened before. And trying to allow the blocked content doesn't appear to make a difference. Also, whenever I go on certain pages, the links have all been replaced by a white box with a red cross in it. For example, when I go to iTunes, there is a red cross in a white box where the "DOWNLOAD" button used to be. Help me. What do I do?

You had it returned from a friend? From being Fixed?

I'm channeling my DH technerdboy who says the fastest and safest thing to do would be to back all your important files up and he recommends using the system restore disk to put it back to factory settings. Then download a good free antivirus (we use Avast.)

Good luck

Something similar happened to me recently and it turned out the date/clock had been set ahead by accident and so "security certificates" appeared to be out of date, but it was because my calendar was set months ahead. I don't know if that's your problem, but I'd check that at least.

What you do is this:

1. Go to Mozilla.com and read about Firefox.

2. Download Firefox, and check "Yes. Make Firefox my default browser"

3. Import your IE bookmarks during installation. Firefox will walk you through it.

4. Leave IE on your computer, but remove all the shortcuts from your desktop, dock, and toolbars.

5. Have a much faster, happier, and safer internet experience.

Is the parental controls option turned on? Go to control panel --> Parental Control option. And look if for your account there has been issued access restrictions. Or just turn the thing off if it's turned on.

Also it could be your browser. Maybe you could try another one like fire fox . That is if you can get to the site and install it.

Some standard things you can do when having internet explorer problems are:
In the tools menu; Delete browsing history; Clear temporary internet files; Delete any offline files. In the tools menu --> Internet options -->Advanced tab --> Verify under Multimedia that Show Pictures check box is selected.

On the security tab click default for the internet zone.

You could also check if your firewall is blocking stuff or that you are running an add blocker.

Hope this helps. (If you use internet explorer, really try firefox. ;) )

This! Do this thing right here! What she said!

Firefox = cool and good and fast and awesome and worky.

IE = bad and crappy and slow and crappy and non-worky.

Just sayin'.

Also... Avast! is good virus protection.

Another vote for Firefox. I still have IE, and about two times a year I find some amateur site which cannot display properly on Firefox and view it using IE, but other than that, I'm a totally happy camper. Well, except that my idea of camping is a hotel with less than three stars.

Heh. FF is great, but it does sound like a "simple" matter of your security settings have been changed, as well as set to block images. Follow Al's suggestion to reset to default, etc.
