Okay...I've had several requests for partials and full MS recently (yay) however, on several occasions the agents have requested a "detailed paragraph about publishing history". Considering I have no publishing history that's going to be a very short paragraph.
So what the heck do you say, ummm sorry I've like never done this before. Or...pad it with all your college poetry entries? I have had a short story published in a po-dunk magazine but it wasn't a literary 'zine and they totally botched it up in the editing process. (Clearly their editor did not realize that those indentions at the beginning of the dialog were supposed to be there).
Needless to say that is not something I want in my resume' ;) Any how...I basically have zilch...
So what the heck do I say (without sounding like and idiot) and how do I say it (without sounding desperate).

Thanks

Hmm, I've never had a request for a publishing history paragraph from agents, but I would simply say, "I have no publishing history, and this is my first novel."

When I got this request I simply said, I have not yet been published.

For you, you could say something like, "Except for some poems in my college literary journal and a story in a now-defunct online magazine, I have not been published."
