View Full Version : London AW Meet, Sat 22 May 2010 !

The London AW meet is going ahead on the afternoon of Saturday, 22 May 2010. We are meeting in the function room (upstairs) of The George pub, The Strand, London WC2R 1AP (map here (http://www.capitalpubcompany.com/the-george/get-here.aspx)). The pub is opposite the Royal Courts of Justice, and the nearest tube station is Temple.

We can have the room all to ourselves, from about 1pm to 5pm. After that, those that have to travel home will still have time to get trains, and those that want to stay on can maybe move on somewhere else.

It was not possible to find a date to please everyone, but hopefully enough people can make this one to make it a success.

Happy to answer any queries - just ask.

Hope to see you there.

Shara

Should we wear name-badges?

Shara

Maybe we should wear AW handle name-badges so we know who's who!

Maybe we should wear AW handle name-badges so we know who's who!

I'll have to qualify my presence with actually being in the UK at the time, but if I am... will you beat up the insufferable know-it-all Maxinquaye, or should I wear a badge saying 'Birol'?

Lordy, haven't been to the West End in so long, I'm a bit scared.

Suppose there are footy hooligans and I get my bag snatched and the tube gets stuck and someone vomits on my shoes?

Can't we meet in Chiswick, instead? (Whine, whine).

Football season will have finished by then, and Chiswick is terrible to get to unless you're driving.

Chiswick? Only one good thing about Chiswick - only I can't remember what it is! ID? - hmmmm - maybe we should all carry quill pens?

I was in London last July (from North Carolina.) I wonder if it's too late for me to claim to have left something and zip back over to fetch it in May.

How dare you! What about the...ummm...the - ooh, I know - the comedy club? The Old Cinema Antique Shop? High Road House brasserie? Devonshire road shops? Norman Shaw houses? Er...Arts Ed students talking loudly about their acting projects and getting all Glee on the green in the summer?

Oh, OK, West End it is.

The rest of us want pictures, and a full report! I always LOVE it when AWers do a regional meet up. I try very hard to get myself to them, if at all possible.

London in May just isn't possible, I'm afraid - but rest assured I'm horribly envious and hope you have a marvelous time.

Dearest Shara,
Thanks for organising such an event.
I have been eager to meet members of AW for a couple of years now.
I have just heard about this from Lostwanderer and waylander.
Thank you both. :)
London is fine by me, and I'll put the 22nd May in my diary.
I shall be meeting with Jonathan Porritt in The George in 2 weeks, so I shall be visiting this pub for the first time then.
I look forward to meeting you all then! :D
P.S-Will scarletpeaches be attending?

I don't think I have ever been to that part of London - at least not knowingly - but looking forward to it.

I will look up train tickets today, and assuming they don't cost me a fortune, I will be there. :-) Looking forward to meeting you all.

waylander

If the train is too expensive you could consider taking a coach.
Get a train ticket that includes a one-day tube pass. The Tube is expensive if you buy one-off tickets

Well, we're nearly at Meet Day, and as usual weekend engineering works are making it very difficult for anyone coming into London on a Saturday.

The TfL website link has been posted earlier - would recommend everyone take a look, as most of the tube lines are affected.

The good news is the district line is running through Temple, so it is possible to get there by Tube.

Several AWers will be coming in to Waterloo, and I think the best option from there is a bus to The Strand.

If anyone has any concerns/queries, please let us know.

Look forward to meeting you all on Saturday.

Shara

Everyone was very nice. :) I think I'd forgotten that a lot of writers can be a bit introverted, so I think we were all in a similar frame of mind of not letting anyone be left hanging if they said something, and keeping the conversation going. We talked about zombies, computer games, films, publishing, scary real-life critique group experiences, writing and AW. :) It was a glorious day in London, and the meet was a lot of fun. We did take a few photographs, which we were mucking about for before the serious posed ones were taken. :)

Edit: I didn't have a quill, so I took a biro with feathers from the sofa cushions taped to it. And everyone was kind enough to give me their autographs. :)

I was mulling over this one and was even getting prepared to travel by train to the big smoke to attend the event when, suddenly, I was overtaken by an 80 degree weekend and an invitation to a drink sodden barbie. I'm ashamed to admit that it wasn't a hard decision, but I'd like to pay triibute to those that did turn up and hereby swear an oath to attend the next London AW meeting (if there is one) . I salute the people that made the effort that I didn't, and hope that it leads to bigger things. (But please try to choose a bad weather day next time!)

I meant to go but then my friends decided on a trip to Alton Towers. I traveled all the way to Oxford to meet up with them and then the car broke down and I didn't get either good thing :(

That's what I get for skipping on previous plans. Maybe next time there's any AW meets in London since that's where I'm living now.

(or those of us who live here could meet anyway I know it's not nice to exclude people but... we live close to each other so why not?)

I think it'd be really unfair if it was always in London. I know it's the Centre of the Universe (;)) but spare a thought for those of us who have to get 400 miles, and it's NOT cheap. Repeat after me:

"I will not burst in to flames if I go north of Watford." :wag:

I thought there's be two meets, another in the North in June or something?

Actually I'd quite happily go to one further afield.

I've always wanted to go to forn parts. :D

There seems to have been a division at this point (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4674158&postcount=103) in the other thread.
After that the Londoners continued to plan and the Northerners didn't.

I am pretty much tied to the south and can never make a meet further than, say, Oxford or something.

Thank you so much for the photos, shara, IdiotsRUs and aruna. They are lovely. :)

It was really nice to get to know a little bit of all of you, and I'm happy I came down.

I look forward to meeting up with you all again soon, and more new members too. :D

I'm quite flexible on travelling, so can do any place if advised beforehand.

Layabout northern monkeys. :tongue

So, when's it happening? If it's not *too* far north, I could probably manage that one too. :)

Ah. I didn't realise the Northerners were supposed to go their own way. I thought we were all planning it together.

I don't organise parties. I have in the past and no one has ever turned up. Not one person. Ever. Hopefully I'll get the job I'm going for on Monday and then I'll be significantly less available anyway. :D

We were until I think someone said that obviously it's hard for us all to find a place that's not billions of miles ( okay, not billions...) to travel for everyone so maybe we should have two.

Next meet at Fran's place? :D

Yes. :evil Send all the drink, cake and vegetarian food to my place. Then when you all cancel one by one I can at least have a good time. :D

I particularly love profiteroles. For those of you who are writing this down. ;)

I organised the London meet. I leave it to someone further North to organise the other meet!
