In my story the MC (a cat) comes across a garter snake. I found a website that gives Culebra de Agua Nómada as the spanish term for garter snake but I wondered if there might be a shorter, more common way of saying it.

Depends on where you are ... I searched for the scientific name on Spanish sites and came up with some others:
jarretera (means garter in Spanish)
Serpientes de Jarretera (garter snakes)
culebra rayada (striped snake)

What, for a lil' ol' garter snake? I probably will go with culebra rayada or culebra jarretera. Thanks, all.
When I linked to the Spanish version of the Wikipedia article for common garter snake, the first line said "La serpiente de jarretera o culebra rayada (Thamnophis sirtalis)". Take your pick.
