I've been working on a historical targeted for HQ. Here is a link to a thread in SYW. I've posted a scene I've been working on. Comments appreciated

I know nothing about the historical line, I'm afraid. Sometimes I think I know nothing about writing for LI at all
they are definitely looking for their own style.and yep, I write Insp Romance and have done Insp women's fic and secular women's fic and used to write for Sil Romance (as you asked about sweet romances, which, sigh, aren't really around much anymore BUT you can do an LI that isn't much different, just has a very light touch of Christianity).

I commented. I think I was tough on the scene, as written. Sorry.
The overall idea has great dramatic potential.
I'd recommended taking the scene away from what is primarily a set of speeches delivered at a lecturn.
I'd put this idea into dialog and direct interpersonal confrontations.

I didn't think you were harsh at all. That's why I posted to get opinions and I am glad you took the time to look at it
You are persuasive about avoiding distraction in a chapter that has to be about the H&H coming together.
One thought -- can you represent the reaction of the congregation with one person. Yes -- it draws the attention away from your primary purpose in the scene. But it also humanizes and makes more realistic the process you want to summarize.
I'm thinking something along the lines of . . .
In the next aisle Mrs. Jones looked up from twisting her handkerchief in ther lap. She saw contrition in those eyes. Maybe something more. Maybe some old memory roused from a long sleep.

I made some comments. Take what you can use, leave the rest.
And I'm with Annie. If I could figure out 5% of what LI wants (as opposed to what they SAY they want), I'd have sold to them a long time ago. They seem exceedingly picky to me.

From what I have heard, I have to agree and I think that's HQ in general with every line. They are so specific on what they want if you stray a tad you're out.
My WIP is targeted to Steeple Hill's Historical line, yet I think my chances of pubbing with them are slim to none. I do also have a list of other potential pubs to keep my options open.

Isn't Bethany House big in historicals? I don't think your chances of selling to LI are bad at all, they are doing great and need books. However, you chances of knowing what they want, that's the tricky one!

That is the key. I was on Bethany House's site and could not find any guidelines for submission. I need to scratch that, they only take agented subs

why not look for an agent? I think Steeple Hill might be the one place that you don't need one.
Read the scene and wasn't sure what I was reading (the opening? the ending? If it's anything but the opening (which I gather it wasn't) not sure what help I'd be so didn't make a comment.

The start of the last chapter. But from the comments received, I'm thinking it may be a bit over the top. An agent would be a bonus for sure.

I have a friend who sold one novel to LI, and has since had 5 rejections. It's do-able, but as the others said, hard to predict what they want.

Bethany is fine with historicals as long as they are set post-1500. Dave Long said he'd love to see a well written one from an earlier date, but he cannot get 'em past committee. It's a firm thing. This won't affect you, Brain, but that's what he told me last year when I asked him about a European-set project before 1500.
FWIW. Nelson, however, seems wide open as far as historical time-frames.
