Is this the thread that I would come to if my mind is drawing a blank on what some things are called?

I was once working a story about someone coming out of the that walkway at the airport. You know, where you walk through once you step out of the plane? I even called an airline and asked them. It's called a breezeway. Now I know..breezeway.

I didn't know if this thread of FAQ's was also the "What the hell is the name of...." posts, too.

I use the grammar and syntax one for that. Never really thought about whether that was the appropriate place or not, but this happens to me OFTEN. I spend half of my time thinking in Japanese and I swear I'm forgetting English. :tongue

It would only be a breezeway if it was open on the sides. Otherwise, it would be a corridor (I've heard different terms used).

And a breezeway are also those patios that are between the house and garage, too, right?

A breezeway is a covered walkway, but I think some people do use the term to mean the sitting or patio area between a house and garage. Or between two parts of a house; in log cabin days they sometimes built what was called a "dogtrot house" with what could be considered a breezeway in between.

When I was working as a home health aide, I had a client tell me that he wanted to sit in the dogtrot. I had no idea where he meant, since I never heard that term before. Finally, he just told me the breezeway.

This is a BRILLIANT idea for a thread. Any time somebody gets stuck on a "what the hell do you call that" sort of thing...and does an ass-load of research to figure it out...they should post the results here for some other poor soul who might wind up in the same sitch.

Because you know what the damn thing looks like but you haven't the faintest idea what it is called, or even what it ought to be called.

Here's my first contribution. Dormer windows. You no longer have to say "windows that look like a little house poking up out of the roof of a substantially larger house."

Just say "dormer windows."

I have not one, not two, but three hardbound reference books which attempt to address the eternal what's that thing called? questions that arise so often. Of course, they let me down plenty of times, but they're useful, too--and I'd happily check one if somebody needed that.

Skelly, your post made me giggle.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person in the world that goes, "WTH is that thing...". And sometimes it's just so hard to explain to others.

You can see it clearly in your mind, but somehow the words get all tangled up and it comes out in nonsense.
