I thought Assassins Apprentice was awful.
Actually, Assassin's Apprentice wasn't bad, but the next book in the series literally made me throw the book across the room.
The writing was great, no problems there.
But what annoyed me to no end were the villians and the contrived excuses that enabled the villians to get away with their evil and nonsensical plans while the protagonists just stood off to the side twiddling their thumbs and saying "too bad there's nothing we can do about it".
If the villians and protagonists' responses to the villians would have been more realistic, then I think the series could have kicked ass. Unfortunately, things got so bad in book two that after I hurled the book across the room (sometime after the midway point), I never picked it up again to finish reading
That sorta turned me off to Robin Hobb. Even though she (or is it he?) is a great writer (proficiency wise), the story/plot annoyed me so much that I feared her other books would be more of the same.
