I'm terribly excited about Robin Hobb's latest book: Dragon Keeper: Volume One of the Rain Wilds Chronicles.

Has anyone read it? And comments on how it compares to Hobb's other trilogies? I'm waiting for this one to come out in paperback.

I'd be interested in opinions of this book as well. I loved Robin Hobb's first three trilogies but hated her Soldier Son books. Not sure whether to try Dragon Keeper.

Ah, I LOVED the Bingtown Trader books. Loved loved LOVED THEM.

In fact, hearing the name Robin Hobb usually makes me get my much loved book Ship of Magic and read it!

Well, I usually read the sex scene, THEN start at the beginning because I'm a pathetic loser.

My only complaint with her books so far is that the Bingtown Traders go: Ship of Magic, Mad Ship, then Ship of Destiny.

Why not make the second book Ship of Madness?

<grumbles>

Ooohohoooh, this is another book in the Bingtown setting.

<excitement levels go up!>

^LOL

Well, I thoroughly disliked the last two books of the Soldier Son trilogy, thought the first was very good. In both the Farseer and Fool trilogies, I felt the ending was anti climatic although the trilogies themselves were excellent.

The Liveship trilogy's definitely the best and I'm excited that the new series continues on in the same setting! YAY

Yeah, I don't have much love for Hobb. I read her Assassin's tril and wanted to smack her for how dull they were. I keep hearing so much love for Hobb. Maybe her other trilogies are better? I may have to get online and buy some used copies - since I definitely DO NOT want to put any money directly in Hobb's pocket by buying from an actual store.

I read the first book last week. It's pretty good and up to par with Hobb's usual standards. The book's focused on the Rain Wilds, which is pretty interesting. A couple older characters come by from the Liveship trilogy. Again, I love the complexity of Hobb's characters. There's the usual doom and gloom.

I believe the second is releasing......May 11. I'll be buying that one.

ETA: The first and second books are supposed to be one book. I strongly recommend reading them together. The first book has no climax.

I've read each of her trilogies as one. I plan to wait until all three of this trilogy are out and do the same.

Hobb's real name is Ogden. She uses multiple pen names to help readers distinguish between her writing styles. Those who don't like Hobb might prefer Lindholm.

I thought Assassins Apprentice was awful.

Actually, Assassin's Apprentice wasn't bad, but the next book in the series literally made me throw the book across the room.

The writing was great, no problems there.

But what annoyed me to no end were the villians and the contrived excuses that enabled the villians to get away with their evil and nonsensical plans while the protagonists just stood off to the side twiddling their thumbs and saying "too bad there's nothing we can do about it".

If the villians and protagonists' responses to the villians would have been more realistic, then I think the series could have kicked ass. Unfortunately, things got so bad in book two that after I hurled the book across the room (sometime after the midway point), I never picked it up again to finish reading

That sorta turned me off to Robin Hobb. Even though she (or is it he?) is a great writer (proficiency wise), the story/plot annoyed me so much that I feared her other books would be more of the same.

Mel...

Just chiming in to say that the ending of this series isn't very good. It's a two book series and the climax is very uneventful and not very explanatory. :(
