script manager fees

Is it normal for a manager to ask money up front? 1000$ -2000$ or even 5000$? I thought managers made their money once the script was sold

I need your opinion on this. I can't really find information on the web about this.

No. Anyone asking for money up front in a scam. If they are working for money up front then you know they aren't making their money where they are supposed to and that's selling stuff for their clients. Money flows to the writer, not away. (unless of course we're talking classes or some other such.)

I am also perplexed. I find in the net that many people are paying money for professonal coverage and here you people are telling that it is a scam . sorry don't mistake me I just want to be clear , as I am confused

Coverage is something else. It's much like editing, some people deliver good service, others are out to take your money. When it comes to coverage or editing, you need to carefully investigate the person or company doing the job (ask on the beware and background check forum if you're unsure.) Even better, learn to do it yourself or get free help here on the forums.

In this case the sign it was a scam was in the name. You don't ever need a script manager. Scripts are sold either by yourself or by agents -- and agents don't ask money upfront, but a comission once the sale is made.

Totally different animal. Coverage is a service, like classes and such. You pay for that service if it's something you want. I personally would never pay for coverage because I don't have that kind of money laying around for one thing.

Yes, run away from any manager or agent charging a fee (other than the 10-15% they take once your work sells)...

You should write to this creep and let him know you're wise to his scam and that you've put the word out for others to beware.

As for coverage: This is something that's generally done within the confines of a prodco and it's not necessarily meant for the writer himself. What you need is a CRITIQUE/EVALUATION.

Bad idea. Let them think your email address is no longer valid or they'll keep pestering you.

Coverage can help determine where a script is lacking, but in my opinion it's not worth the money. Get free critiques first.

Scambuster

I kinda doubt the scammer will keep pestering you. And so what if he does? If more people stood up to these creeps—let 'em know you're wise to their scam, got the word out to others, marked their e-mail as "junk," etc.—then maybe they wouldn't be quite so prevalent. At the very least, you'll have some satisfaction knowing you did SOMETHING.

Can you

name the manager
name the company
tell us how much $ they wanted from you
where you found them or they found you.

You may want to put that info on this thread, but also put the info on beware boards, so that others vetting managers can find the info.
