i have a new dell computer with windows seven. i have been working on a new story and thinking i had things pretty much under control--considering i didn't experience television until i was seven years old. then i tried to send my document to my fav. beta reader. she couldn't open it. i saved it as a windows 97 doc. but she still couldn't open it. the story is still short enough to copy and paste. i found the copy and paste functions in word--finally--but i can't find the paste on my yahoo e-mail. my whippersnapper beta is now calling me granny clampett! please help--s6

You say you're using Windows 7, but what application are you using for your writing? MS Word?

Right click? I don't know yahoo, but I always try rt-click for copy and paste (select text first).

Or CTRL+C for copy and CTRL+V for paste

word 97 format is so old almost anything should be able to open it, I'd say the problem is on your friend's end.

Yeah, something is wrong there. Windows 7 has nothing to do with it. It's the word processor that determines how something is saved. Anyone, anywhere should be able to open a Word 97 document.

There is something else you can try. Try changing the file name and redoing the extension-don't change the extension just retype it.
I have an old mac and found that sometimes when I save something whether it's a word 97 doc or jpeg or any perfectly generic-should be compatible with anything-file, some pcs won't open it. Some will, some won't. But go and redo the file name and it opens. I'm not sure the technical reasons for this except it may be the way the computer saves the file: sometimes even if its jpg the .jpg doesn't show on the file name when it's on the pc. (I've only tried on Windows xp ugh!) I've even tried it uploading to Myspace when pics wouldn't upload. I have no idea sometimes why it works. :Shrug:

I've also found said docs might open fine in Microsoft office but not Microsoft works.
Some machines-and some programs- are just finicky. :Hammer:

Unless you have complex formatting, save it as an RTF or TXT file.

I'm the one referring to poor Shakey as Granny Clampet.

The document is showing as .docx, and attempts to open it lead to a very confusing set of instructions as to how to download a compatibilty pack.
I want to be able to open it, read it, edit it. Is there an easier way?

You can get the Office converters free from Microsith, should be able to open it unless your Office is a fossil. In that case, Granny will have to try another save option or learn to paste.

But anyhoom, Granny, you don't need buttons to copy and paste. The universal keyboard commands are Ctrl+C = Copy and Ctrl+V = Paste.

Also good to know are Ctrl+A = Select All and Ctrl+Z = UNDO!!!!!! Not to mention Ctrl+S = Save, which everyone should do every 30 seconds.

Copy and Paste buttons are the first thing I eliminate from all customizable toolbars, because who needs them? :ROFL:
