Just thought I'd relate to you what's happened today. I've been working on an MG fiction, and managed to snare myself a great agent. We've been submitting to publishers, getting good responses, and amazingly, a request from one large publisher to come in and have a chat about the book. We went in, had a fantastic meeting and talked about what changes were needed in order for this book to be something they'd want to take on.
So far, so exciting. I left the offices with so many wonderful ideas bubbling away, and a very clear idea of the (quite major) plot changes that needed to be made. The tone and style were what they really went for and were why they asked me in, the plot desired work.
But then I hit a massive snag - every time I tried to rework the plot I contradicted myself, got stuck, made it ugly or clumsy, or took it off the original intention of the book.
But, today, with the help of a detailed set of editorial notes from the publishers, I cracked it. I've worked out exactly what needs changing, I came across a neat and surprising solution, and I know I can do it. And what a simple solution; it was staring me in the face all along!
So basically, I can see the finish line. The publishers were talking positively about an offer, but were holding up to see if I could submit a well edited manuscript. The end is in sight!!!
Just thought I'd let you guys know, and promise to keep you updated in the horrendous months (years?) to come.
HURRAH!
