Wandering through the romance section of the local Barnes & Noble, I came across a novel by an "award-winning" romance writer. And then I found another award-winning romance writer. And another.

Not one of the books listed the name of the writer's award, oddly enough.

I've never won a writing award (oh, so jealous!) but I know we must have some award winners in this group. If you've ever won an award, shout it out, okay?

I won the Coffee Time Reviewer's Choice Award in April 2007 for Hell's Belles. Does that count?

Hmm. I won a couple Harlequin writing contests, The Trouble With Tessa won 1st place in SARA's 'Magic Moments' contest, and Ready To Reel was awarded Long & Short Romance Reviews Best Short Book of 2008, but I'm not inclined to call myself an "award-winning" romance writer.

I've won the More than Magic contest a couple times, and the National Readers' Choice Award. Been a finalist in quite a few others, including the Rita and the Golden Heart.

Aspen Gold Readers' Choice for Best Contemporary Romance is probably my "best." I'm also a double EPIC finalist, so I can hope to add more to my resume.

Actually, (hate to brag, but you asked...) I've finaled eight books/manuscripts in twenty-four contests. Just won the Where the Magic Begins and GOTCHA! with my urban fantasy...

Okay...slinking off so people don't gawk...

I don't enter contests anymore, and you can bet none of my e-books ever was nom'd to any award in the RWA, LOL!!

I'm hoping my April release qualifies for entry in ACFW's book of the year award. That's the only one I covet, short of a Pulitzer.

I co wrote an adult film called Every Woman Has a Fantasy. It won Best sexual content at the Adult video awards in 1985 I know people think pornography isn't romance or erotica, but I disagree.

I won a RITA for Lord and Spymaster. The RITA is given out every year by the RWA.
I was the American Library Association RUSA Reading List Selection for Romance with Spymaster's Lady.
And Spymaster's Lady was a DIK. That's from the All About Romance site.

If you get a DIK and go to National they will find you and give you a cool pin. You get a pin for the RITA, too. And a statue. It's a very pretty statue.

And if I haven't congratulated you guys lately, CONGRATS!! You guys ROCK! :D And yes, Annie, I would like to know the details. :D

When we first wrote Hunter's Moon, I entered it in every contest under the sun. It started WINNING every contest under the sun. By the time we'd racked up eight wins and another ten finals, I realized that people were getting seriously annoyed with us (yeah, that happens...A LOT!) So, I stopped entering so many contests. Sad, but true. I entered a few here and there and won a few others by nomination (that I didn't enter) but lately I haven't entered any at all. Mostly it's a time issue. I plain forget to enter in time. I haven't entered the RITA for the past three years. But here's the full list of first, second and third places.

I've been a PEARL, EPIC finalist but have only one "big" win that was waaaay back in 1999 for my debut paranormal Timeless Wish (part of the old Jove Time Passages line).

It won the NJRW Golden Leaf for Best First Book. I smile to myself each and every time I look that that shiny little plaque *is a dork*

Wow, congrats to everyone who has won an award. I was curious how you win an award. Does someone nominate you, or do you have to enter your story? If the second, eo you enter the contest after the book is published?

They can work both ways, Nicole. Most of those people have posted are post-publication. Magazines or websites will often nominate a book that they particularly liked. Many chapters of RWA and other organizations have competitions that the author (or publisher) enters the book or story in. Some are very well known and sponsored by writing groups:

The RITA - Romance Writers of America
The Bram Stoker - Horror Writers of America
The Nebula - Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America
The Edgar - Mystery Writers of America

Others are by chapter or even through local reader groups.

Does that help?

Not for fiction writing. I've won some professional society awards through work done on the job, and some "Extra Effort" type awards at work.

If I leave off the citations, perhaps even I could be an "Award-Winning Novelist"!

I forgot to post (extremely important) I was at one time, by acclamation, the Queen of the Not Ready for Prime Time Writers.

That should count for, oh...something.
