Podcast markets - audio rights question

It all depends on the wording of the contract, but I'd say that a podcast of the short story, unless it's going to be placed verbatim into the novel (and maybe even if so), wouldn't be an issue for audio rights of the novel.

from a podcast i like to listen to and consider submitting to:

We’re an audio market, and we buy nonexclusive rights, so it doesn’t hurt us if a story has previously appeared in another market. In fact, we encourage new authors to send their work to other markets first, and then send it to us for audio rights after the story has appeared. You’re welcome to give us first dibs on anything you like, but consider: if your story’s good enough for us to buy it, it’s probably good enough to sell to another market first. Why not try that, and get two audiences and two checks?

-So for the first part that blurb should help. the second part, I don't understand. so you'd (1) publish and story, (2) then have it published as a podcast, (3) then have it expanded into a novel you want to publish?
If the had the same short story in the novel, could you be infringing on copyright because the print or electronic publisher has the rights (likely for 3 years), and if you had the same passage appear in an audio version of the book?

Does it interfere with audiorights for the book in any way or is it considered a positive all round like the publication of the short story tends to be?

If you put a short story verbatim into a novel, when you've already published that short story, then you'd need to check the contracts for both the short story and the novel very carefully (and make sure whoever you were submitting the novel to was aware of what you were doing). The same would apply for audio rights, I suspect.

If you're expanding a short story into a novel, so that little of the original work remains apart from aspects of the plot and characterisations, you're more likely to be okay. Again, check contracts thoroughly, but if it's the kind of publisher that's laid claim to the characters and settings, it's probably not a publisher you want to consider going with (this varies, of course - many publishers want first refusal on sequels, but that's not really what we're looking at here). Of course, if the short story does well, people may accuse you of being unimaginative!
