"How did you know how to turn the lights on?"
"How did you know where to turn the lights on?"
"The lights. They're on. How did you do that?"
"Well, if I had known where the switch was, I'd have turned the lights on myself!"

When did you learn how to turn on the lights?

Why do compound words like "without" get separated so much when words that should be separate (like a . lot, every . day, and any . more) always end up stuck together?
