I'm used to writing in first person past (and i've also tried first person present but didn't like it). Anyways, I'm writing a book and I realized that my book would go best with writing in third person past. I've never really written in 3rd person, but I want to try something new.

So do you guys have any tips to writing in 3rd person past?

Pretty much the same as writing in 1st person except you say he/his or she/hers instead of the constant I/me/my of first.

Well then, there you go.

Are you doing omniscient, or limited?

I'm writing in third person limited, but I am going to switch characters every other scene. There's two main characters and I want to tell from the perspective of both...

That's a good question right now.
HINTS:

  • Don't use 'I' except in dialogue.
  • Don't use present tense verbs.
  • Don't provide any information that the current POV character wouldn't have access to or knowledge of.

Okay, cool. I like that kind of narrative. My advice is, make sure the POV is clear at each switch. Also, ask yourself why, exactly, am I writing this scene in this POV? Could it be told better from the other perspective?

Have fun. :)
