Does anybody know why they are nominating TEN films this year?

I missed some of the live announcements. I've never known there to be 10 nominated movies for best picture.

A few reasons.

Room for more mainstream movies, which translates into higher ratings for the broadcast and red carpet. (You can thank Dark Knight's lack of a nomination last year for this.)

More movies get to say they are a "best picture" nominee, which means everyone from actors to directors to general staff for that project get to say they worked on a best picture film. This is a boost for Hollywood in general.

With the demise of downtown theaters, it's a PITA for me to see anything since they're all out at the suburban malls.

I'm very happy about District 9 and UP getting Best Picture nominations. And my fingers are crossed for Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director. If she won, she would be the first woman to do so (and she is the second woman - that's it - to get the nomination in the first place).

Her chances are getting better and better. She won at the Director's Guild the other day. Avatar and Cameron only won at the Golden Globes, which has never really been a predictor of the Oscars.

Like I said upthread, I think District 9 is going to split the Avatar vote, but we'll see if then those who don't vote Avatar for Best Picture decide to vote Cameron for Director instead.

Inglourious Basterds is the only one of the 10 that I have seen. BTW, having ten nominees is great for the movies that are out there, but it's going to make the awards show even longer than it already was.
Looking forward to The Hurt Locker when it comes around here, which should be at the time of the ceremony, certainly if it wins.

Sweet praises! I'm so glad that Up got nominated in the Best Picture category. About time the Academy realized that an animated film can be one of the best pictures of the year.

However, I can't help but feel that Michael Giacchino's score for Star Trek was overlooked in the Best Original Score category (at least he got the Up nom, though). And where the heck is Ponyo?!

Not a bad list, though. The films on here are certainly more popular than the ones of last year.

Actually they have before. Beauty and the Beast was nominated for Best Picture back in the day. The problem was shortly after that they introduced that new Best Animated Feature category which relegated animated films to second class status.

Fourth actually - after Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion and Sofia Coppola. KB would certainly have my vote

I've seen six of the ten Best Picture nominees - Avatar, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, A Serious Man and Up. Precious and Up in the Air have only just opened here and I haven't seen them yet. The Blind Side isn't out until March. One of these days I'll catch up with District 9.

Yup. There was a lot of talk last year with Wall-E, but it didn't make the cut. And I suspect that Up wouldn't have either if it weren't for the upgrade to ten nominations.

Oh well, I'm still happy.

UP is going to get Best Animated Feature, but I'm glad it's also *up* for Best Picture. It's about time a Pixar movie is rewarded with a best picture nod!!!

I was surprised by A Serious Man. I mean, how many people actually heard of it or seen it? It's definitely a nod to the Coen brothers, though. Same with An Education -- it came out of nowhere (nobody even knew it was playing at the local art house theatre!)

The rest are pretty close to expectations.

Looks like it would be a David vs. Goliath match: indie fave ($16M) Hurt Locker vs. box office champ ($600M and counting) Avatar....

I think Bigelow is going to win Best Director but Avatar most likely will get Best Picture -- this is Hollywood after all. But Inglorious Basterds won the SAG award so it also has a shot.

There is no doubt in my mind that Mo'Nique is going to get the Oscar. It's almost as certain to me as Marion Cotillard (for La Vie en Rose) or Kate Winslet (for The Reader).

I haven't seen Crazy Heart yet so I can't say, but given that Jeff Bridges has won almost every major award so far, and given that he's such an under-appreciated actor, this is his year.

Yeah, it wouldn't. If we only had five nominations, they would be Avatar, Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Up in the Air and An Education.

The fact that Up In the Air did not receive an Editing nomination means it's practically out of the Best Pic race. To me, it's a three-horse race among Avatar, Hurt Locker, and Inglorious Basterds. The Jewish constituents could vote for Basterds, but the Hollywood old-timers would most likely go for the epic, Avatar. Precious is the dark horse, but way, way, way too dark (no pun intended).

He won the Golden Globe. And he did a great job in Inglourious Basterds playing a VERY unlikable man.
