In this scene a teenage boy traveling with 2 older male companions has to spend the night in an old barn with 2 rather unsavory characters in another stall a few yards away. When he wakes in the morning he finds out his boots have been stolen and sets up quite a fuss. One of his companions asks him "Are you trying to wake the dead?" Is this translatable into Spanish or is there a better expression I could use?

Second, his companion wants to know why he went to sleep on his watch with these 2 characters "within spitting distance". How would you express in Spanish that someone is maybe a bit too close for comfort?

My suggestions would be:

1.-
"Intentas despertar a los muertos?" (same as you wrote)
"Por qué tanto escándalo?" ("Why so much racket?")

2.-
"Tan cerca que podría escupirles" ("so close he could spit on them")
"Demasiado cerca para estar cómodo" ("too close to be comfortable")
