Different Program

I need a different word program, some how mine doesnt correct spelling and and its rather annoying..

Is there a place where I can download a free copy of word or anything that will help me?

Try looking up abiword. Its a free, open source version of word, just without all the extra overhead.

Are you sure you have the preferences or options to check spelling turned on?

Which platform are you using? (Windows, Mac, Linux?) There are two open source programs for the Mac that I've heard of. I've never tried any of them personally though, so I don't know how good they are but I thought I'd offer them up in case you're interested.

- NeoOffice is an entire office suite including a word processor.
- Bean for Mac

If you're on windows, I found these (again, never used them myself so I don't know how good they are):

- Like everyone else has mentioned AbiWord.
- Lotus Symphony from IBM: I usually prefer downloading programs from cnet - as they're tested for spyware. Couldn't find this one for Windows there, just Mac. However, since it's from IBM I'm assuming it's safe?

Yeah, something is turned off, if Word won't check spelling. OpenOffice isn't too bad, but forget Abiword, if you want to write long documents. It's junk.

I use Open Office (www.openoffice.org) for my current WIP, just to see how I like it. It has some annoying features but I could use it if I had to.

If you are in Word 2007, click on the round button at the top left, go to Word Options, select "proofing" and see what's checked in the "When checking spelling and grammar" area. It seems that doing it this way makes changes in each new document you open, while "set language" only does it in the current document.

I'm using Windows. I've looked everywhere to see where the spelling is turned off. When I click for it to check spelling, it says spelling is fine. But I know its not because I put words spelled wrong to see if it will prompt it to correct it.. but it says its fine the way its spelled.

If Word gets corrupted (as sometimes happens, even to the most careful of us) Word may not be using it's dictionary anymore. Then, no, it will never find misspelled words, even when running spell check. It only knows if a word is spelled wrong if that word does not match any entry in the dictionary.

Also, in Word2003, there are two places to turn spelling and grammar on or off. One is in the Tools--> Options but the other is under Tools--> Language. It's possible to have one on and other off.

And if all else fails, there's always reinstalling.

I think ditching your normal template might help, too, for getting things back to normal.

Openoffice... Though I downloaded an updated version and my spell check works.. I thought the one I had was updated..
