I'm living in a shack with my characters.....
I just discovered something. I love writing all types of YA, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction....but I found out yesterday that fantasy is where my heart lies in novel writing. As a novel writer, which genre is YOUR genre, the genre you were born to write?

I'm a total action/adventure writer with a split between fantasy and science fiction works.

Hrm. I am very much into writing fantasy, but I'm also discovering the joy of steampunk. And I truly enjoy writing erotica as well. I think I might also enjoy writing sort of real-life literary type too, though I haven't tried it yet. Erm, so I don't know which is my true passion, yet. Haven't written enough yet!

Probably literary.

My first three books are in crime; then I want to write a series of Scottish historicals. In future I would like to try a gothic horror [a challenge laid down by a Uni tutor!] and a fantasy novel.

My major genre is definitely YA -- and within that, I mostly write in the fantasy and paranormal sub-genres.

Fantasy. My first thought whenever I have a new story idea is how I can apply some fantasy/paranormal element to it. I naturally gravitate towards the fantasy aisle in any bookstore. YA is the runner-up.

Modern day. This world is entertaining enough without having to add robots, elves, or, heaven help us, more flippin' vampires!

I think I was 'born to' write literary, but I wasn't paying enough attention. I like to read it, anyway :)

I've created a new genre... Magic Realism Lite. We'll see how it goes ;) :D

In all seriousness, I'm not good enough with the words to do it 'properly,' yet I'd love to read a more accessible MR myself anyway. So there ya go. I'm trademarking the name, btw ;)

I'd say probably suspense/horror, which I've always put into the same category because the bookstore I went to growing up always did. Think Stephen King, Dean Koontz, that sorta thing. I do tend to be a bit more psychological than either of them, though.

Having said that, my last two (and the best I've done so far) are harder to define. The last was suspense, easily, but also had a lot of humor and quirkiness to it. The new one is definitely quirky, even funnier (gosh I hope) than the last one, not as suspenseful, definitely not horror, and if I had to say it was anything it's probably closer to action. While some of my other ideas are essentially the same genre I tend to write, I've also got a semi-historical fantasy that I might write next. So honestly, while I still consider myself a suspense writer and think that's my personal comfort zone, based on what I've been writing, I'm not so sure what I am.

My genre is science fiction, in the sense Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams are science fiction writers.

Everything I write has a fantasy element to it. I started out with YA Comedic Fantasy, then moved on to Fantasy Thriller, now Paranormal Erotica, and next is probably going to be Literary with a fantasy element (like, fantastic things happen all throughout, but at the end of the story you find out the MC is schizophrenic, which explains everything... not sure how well I can pull that off, but it's a must-write for me, because I've got some good ideas for it, and I love that it's so psychological.).

So Fantasy for me, even though I apply the fantasy to every genre under the sun.

That's what I prefer to write, but what really floats my boat is comedy... I'm forever seeing comedic things where there shouldn't be any (ie. in the erotica during a tender love scene, when schlock comedy would spoil the mood). So I think I'll always come back to my YA Comedic Fantasy series, and I'd be happiest if I could get them published. I have about 15 books planned for that series...

"Literary."

Which is my cop-out way of saying "I have none. I dabble in every genre."

I wrote a Western Fantasy short story and really liked that. My latest WIP is probably Literary Fantasy? probably falling more on the literary side than the fantasy side.

Basically I like to sprinkle a little "fantasy dust" on everything that I write...just enough enough to appease me though...

The same ones I read--dark fantasy, supernatural horror, sci-fi, mystery, YA. Always character-driven.

My novel-length stuff is spec fic... but it tends to be hard to silo within the genre. Frex: I'm 5k into a historical dystopian paranormal fantasy. And my current MS is literary futuristic post-apoc UF (!), but people have described it as anything from steampunk to New Weird. Just call me a genre mangler. Querying come March will be super fun!

I want to write science fiction. But I'm not very good at it. I have a talent for relationships, especially dialogue, (romance or drama I guess) and believable sex (erotica). Exposing insecurities in humorous ways. Contemporary? Which seems popular to read. So I cash in on that.
